About this listen

Diana: Closely Guarded Secret became a best seller on both sides of the Atlantic.

As a member of Scotland Yard's elite Royalty Protection Department, Inspector Ken Wharfe was personal protection officer - in other words, bodyguard - to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, during the years that saw the final breakdown of her marriage and her separation from Prince Charles.

In that time he became a close friend and trusted confidant who shared her most private moments. His intimate firsthand account provides an affectionate, if not always uncritical, insight into this complex, troubled, but ultimately deeply fascinating woman.

Packed with anecdotes - and now revised with a new chapter containing material about Diana's so-called 'rock', her butler, Paul Burrell - this extraordinary account is the most intimate portrait of Diana to date and a record of the events that unfolded around her during the most crucial period of her life.

Story of Diana's Personal Protection Officer -

factual emotion taken out of the story, tough job with little or no thanks in the end.

Honest and to the point from a. Decent copper.

Good back ground story to modern day fable we all think we know. Honest and revealing of some of the unknown details.
One thing we can draw from it, is this was a tragedy that our new King could have avoided by keeping his mouse in the house.

Clear view of events.

This was an excellent account of events as they happened, without it being about Ken Wharfe and his closeness to Diana, unlike Burrell’s memoir. Interesting that Ken Wharfe agrees with Lady Colin Campbell that Diana wanted rid of Burrell.

A peevish account in places

A decent overall picture but spoiled by references to others accounts of working just as closely with the Princess.
Paul Burrells account was a bit sickly in places but a charming account. Patrick Jephsons account was a tricky listen initially especially after Burrells but overall I think he painted the more balanced picture.

interesting view

straight forward no nonsense easy to listen too
an insight into the personality & struggles of Diana at a difficult time in her life.
Also interesting the way Ken has disected the tragic accident that caused her Death.

An interesting book

Difficult to know what to believe, however out of all the people who have cashed in on the life and death of Princess Diana, Ken Wharfe would appear to be an intelligent articulate man who, while carrying out his duties as PPO was witness to the very colourful life of one of the Icons of the 20th century. He appeared to have done an excellent job of protecting Princess Diana and frankly, had he continued in that role, she would be alive today. Sadly, we will never know what truly happened on that terrible night in Paris, but Ken Wharfes' take on it is interesting and believable. A very interesting book.

A straightforward and reliable witness

A very undramatic and apparently sincere account of Ken Wharfe's working life with Diana. He is fair and balanced, even about people he frankly dislikes, but scathing about the unprofessional and compromised security which led to her death, in his opinion.
