Der Trinker ist das persönlichste Werk von Fallada. Er schrieb diesen Roman während seiner Gefangenschaft in der Landesanstalt Altstrelitz, als er wegen des versuchten Mordes an seiner Frau in der Strafanstalt inhaftiert wurde. Der Roman ist autobiographisch, in Tagebuchform, und erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes in der Gewalt des Alkohols.
