About this listen

The second book in the legendary Poldark series. Demelza Carne, the impoverished miner's daughter Ross Poldark rescued from a fairground rabble, is now his wife. But the events of these turbulent years test their marriage and their love.

Demelza's efforts to adapt to the ways of the gentry - and her husband - bring her confusion and heartache despite her joy in the birth of their first child. Ross begins a bitter struggle for the rights of the mining communities - and sows the seed of an enduring enmity with powerful George Warleggan.

Would you consider the audio edition of Demelza to be better than the print version?

No because it's the same story of course. What is fantastic is that someone reads it to you. Great for bed time listening-or any time listening.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot and the characters and the fact that it has just been serialised really brought it to life.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

When Demelza goes to visit Andrew Blamey and then he visits her back.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes-but a bit long for that!

Great series-even better book!

Enjoyed the continuation of the story of the Poldarks and the Cornish mining community they live near.
The book realistically portrays the times they live in, both upper and lower class.
You will enjoy the way Demelza' continues to grow as a person, even if you may not always agree with her view if herself.
Ross's character continues to annoy but his behaviour is in keeping with the times he lives in.
I am hooked so will be moving onto book 3.
You need to start with book 1 to get the most from this series.

The story continues......

Having read and re-read the books over the years, and been a fan of the 70s series as well as the more recent one, I was easy to please. However, the narrator wasn’t the right choice. All the other books are read by Oliver J Hembrough, who does a brilliant job. This book with its random narrator therefore strikes an odd note. I’m sure Clare Corbett would be perfect for other books, but she’s wrong for this. Also — why oh why don’t Audible producers check in with narrators on pronunciation, or produce some kind of guide? This isn’t the first Audible reading with irritating mispronunciations. It’s not the worst, but it is annoying.

Powerful story

I read the Poldark books many years ago, and it was a joy to listen to them whilst I was working. The reader rendered this book beautifully. The only part I would change was the pronunciation of the word 'rowlocks'.

Revisited with pleasure

This is book two of the Poldark series.

Demelza Carne is now Ross Poldark’s wife!

Demelza is now a mother of a baby girl & she seeks to fit in with her husband’s gentry friends & family. She has grown far from her own impoverished background, whilst keeping her feet firmly grounded.

Ross cares about his miners & his tenants. There is enmity between himself & George Warleggan.

Possibly A Five Star, Change The Narrator!

That's literally the only negative I can muster. How no one involved in the production knew that is beyond me. Such a small irritant though. Five stars all round.

St John as a Christian name is pronounced Sin-Jen

Really enjoyed this. My mother loved Winston Graham and it has taken me many years but I’m glad I am following her. Great narration on this and previous book.

Great book, well read
