Summary

Stopping the most dangerous conspiracy to ever threaten America means believing the unthinkable in an explosive novel by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Steven Konkoly.

Countersurveillance expert Devin Gray is unwittingly thrown headfirst into dangerous new territory after the death of his mother. Helen Gray, a paranoid and disgraced former CIA officer, believed she was on the verge of preventing a national catastrophe - a mission worth dying for. Others, including Devin, believe she was chasing delusions. Until he finds what she left behind.

With the help of longtime friend and former Marine helicopter pilot Marnie Young and a loyal team of covert operatives Helen summoned just before her death, Devin is propelled into a high-stakes chase across the country. What he uncovers, clue by clue, is a conspiracy more widespread and insidious than anyone could have imagined.

Now it’s Devin’s mission to destroy a covert network poised to deliver a fatal blow to the future of the United States. And also to vindicate his mother, by seeing the mission through to its treacherous end.

Sent me into a deep sleep

This is one of the worst books I have listened to in a very long time. The narrators monotonous gravelly voice grated on me that much, after two attempts I had only got to chapter 5 and gave up. I couldn't connect with it at all. It sent me into a Deep Sleep, I have returned the book and will not be buying any more books by Steven Konkoly or narrated by Seth Podowitz.

Deep Sleep

Excellent book. Great to see some old characters back in play. Can’t wait for the next instalment as I feel this story is far from over!

Fantastic and Chilling, Let Down by Narration

Another great story and another reluctant hero. After so many hours being thrilled by John David Farrell's exceptional readings in all of the other Steven Konkoly stories I had high expectations for Deep Sleep. Great new story line but the reading was a let down. It was OK but after Farrell I was expecting a phenomenal performance.
Please bring him back for the next books!

Part 1 of 2

I did not realize that until toward the end of the book. I hope part 2 will be out soon

No wonder there are so many active conspiracy theorists.

The Audible book summary should have warned that this is an episodic story designed to get you to buy the next episode. I will not be doing that. The narration could best be described as wooden and the story is literally unbelievable. Anyone with even modest critical thinking skills will not be able to get through this book without machine gunning hundreds of holes in the storyline. Which is to say that someone like congresswoman MTG would believe it entirely.

Konkoly hits again

Took me a few minutes to get into it. Once the storyline established itself it picked up dramatically. Awesome listen can't wait to start the next book in the series.

Storyline fine, but accents weak

The storyline is worth a listen. Nothing new particularly, but still engaging. I do have to say that the narrator's Russian accent is not very good. Outside of that, it was fine.

Will Stick to Kindle Version

I cannot get through the narration. I own the Kindle version, so I’ll go back and give the book a fair shake once I’ve read it myself. In the meantime, how do they audition narrators??? Has Seth Podowitz ever HEARD an Israeli accent?!? He makes zero attempt to give characters different voices, so the listener knows someone different is speaking.

The narration was completely flat—as if simply reading events from a page like a checklist—no intonation, no sense of urgency, no change in intensity. If I’d wanted to listen to books that way, I’d have had Siri read to me; then the text-to-voice would have been free!

PLEASE Audible directors, casting directors, and authors (whoever has control over the hiring of narrators), PLLLEEEASE choose your narrators more carefully! You have so many good ones available who set the tone from the moment you start listening. They are incredibly engaging and highly skilled at doing character voices. Superstars like Ray Porter, Dick Hill, and Davina Porter. Perhaps Mr. Podowitz merely needs some training. Let’s hope his next endeavor is significantly better than this one.

4 stars . Put a lot into it. like the reader

.It is hard to right a 15 word revue when it stops you. He put a lot into getting out of trouble when needed. I like the story line.

Incomplete, disappointing

This is only a Part 1, of at least 2 parts. I wish this was evident before I purchased this! Wanted a self-contained story. Not what I expected nor wanted.

Good or Bad Timing

I guess it depends on your point of view. The tie in to the Russians and mentions of the Ukraine at this particular time is relevant, but it could go either way as to your point of view. Me. I prefer for my books to be a form of escape from reality so I am not attracted to this material at this time.
