Summary
In letters addressed to their friends, to members of their family - both biological and chosen - and to fellow storytellers, Akwaeke describes the shape of a life lived in overlapping realities. Through heartbreak, chronic pain, intimacy with death, becoming a beast, this is embodiment as a nonhuman: outside the boundaries imposed by expectations and legibility.
This book is an account of the gruelling work of realignment and remaking necessary to carve out a future for oneself.
The result is a black spirit memoir: a powerful, raw unfolding of identity.

A beautiful & haunting body of literature
This is so necessary and beautifully narrated by the author themselves. It makes the listener feel every emotion and soul behind every word. Thank you to the god that is Akwaeke Emezi

Breathtaking
Brutal, gritty and delicate — this is such a beautiful book. Read it. Or not. This book finds those who need it.

Somber
I liked everything Akwaeke wrote before
But I just couldn’t finish this one
Its not just because it’s depressing and a bit too much blaming others and victimising oneself and maybe because I don’t like that victim energy thing
Anyway
Im not sure I just didn’t feel this book is my thing

brilliant
I mean brilliant in its truest sense, Akwaeke Emezi always hits me at the heart, makes my imagination wonder and wander. I found about 3/4 of the way some parts got a little repetitive maybe because they were written as letters and a bit more vague than I would like but I really think they, are saving my life everytime I listen to them

Fantastic!
It's what you'd expect from a "god"; bold, braggadocious, vulnerable, and morbid, delivered in beautiful language.
