Welcome to Haven Hollow, a town of monsters. After dating a string of losers and banishing a poltergeist, I packed up my Los Angeles life and my 11-year-old son, and moved...to a town in Oregon with a population of 680. Well, 682 now. Culture shock anyone? Ahem, never mind that.... New starts can happen anywhere, right? I hope so, because I need to start the next chapter of my 43-year life pronto. So, why Haven Hollow? For one reason - there aren’t any witches here. And a witch can make a gypsy’s life...complicated. Oh, right, I’ve put the cart before the horse.

When LA’s vampires, witches, and werewolves make a mess, they call Scarlett Bernard to clean it up. Her ability as a null erases all magical traces from anything — or anyone — that comes within ten feet of her, and keeps humans in the dark about the city’s paranormal activity. One night when she’s called to a grisly crime scene, Scarlett is spied by the all-too-human LAPD cop Jesse Cruz, who strikes up a deal with her: he’ll keep quiet about the supernatural underworld if she helps him crack the case. She agrees, but the city’s chief vampire, Dash, starts to suspect Scarlett is behind the murders and will reveal all she knows of his shadowy empire. Now it’ll take more than Scarlett’s unique abilities to clear her name, keep the underworld underground, and track down the real killer.

Great Read

Summary
Hard-boiled police detective Richelle Dadd is back. And in a whole world of fresh trouble. Still...well, dead as the result of a Gypsy curse, she must now face life as a single mom. Not only does Richelle have to worry about all the usual stuff - her baby's health and well-being and keeping a roof over their heads by working a precarious dead-end job - there's also her homicidal ex-boyfriend to fear, the father of her child, stalking them both day and night with the avowed intent of kidnapping baby Tamara.
Not to mention a mysterious Russian agent hell-bent on "recruiting" Richelle into a suspiciously perfect overseas job, plus there's a vicious Ripper-style killing to investigate, one that ties in with the Black Rose Murders that terrorized the city nearly 90 years ago. Throw in the increasingly bizarre behavior of Richelle's ex-husband, Devon, and the fact that somebody's bugged every inch of Richelle's house - and it all adds up to a recipe for disaster....
But once again, just as in The Dead Detective, the first book in the series, some very offbeat characters come to her aid. There's her lovesick ex-detective partner, Malena Ayon, for one, and the long-dead ghost cop Bull McGuinness for another. And Richelle's equally dead new boyfriend, a dreamy World War I vet cut down in the prime of his youth. Last but hardly least is the roguish old Irish Traveler and scam artist Dicky Dadd, who claims to be Richelle's vanished father but who may be something else entirely: a half-Gypsy wizard sent to watch over her by the kriss, or Romani High Council.
On the eve of a second Ripper murder at a nearby theme park, Richelle and Malena must race to save an innocent victim's life - along with that of Tamara - while battling shadowy forces both real and supernatural as the story builds to a shattering and unexpected climax.

Highly enjoyable sequel
Thanks to a gypsy curse placed on her by her homicidal ex boyfriend Val Tabori, hard boiled Police Detective Richelle Dadd is undead, stuck between the realm of the living and the dead. Tabori had intended to father a ‘moroi’ (a kind of undead vampire-like creature born of the union between a human and muli). Instead of the son he had hoped for, Richelle has recently given birth to a baby girl, Tamara. Terrified that Tabori will return to claim her daughter for his own nefarious ends, Richie has been on high alert ever since.
While juggling motherhood, Richelle has been given a dead end job in filing, research and cold cases. While researching one such case, Richie connects with a spirit attached to one of the boxes, Sophie Grey who was one of the three Black Rose murder victims in 1931. Wanting to
help Sophie find some measure of peace, Richie starts to look into other cases with similar traits.
Meanwhile, along with a houseful of visiting ghosts from Shadytown, Richie has her roguish old Irish Traveler/scam artist father, Dicky Dadd, staying with her as well as her partner Malena Ayon, who seems to be keeping a secret of her own. In addition, her mother keeps trying to link her up with a visiting cousin from Russia, whose duplicity is giving Richie cause for concern. As if life wasn’t hectic enough, Jennifer keeps calling her up over Devon’s bizarre behaviour.
Richie’s investigation into the Black Rose Murders leads to the shocking discovery of other ritualistic murders committed over the years as well as recent victim. Before long, Richie finds herself battling shadowy forces both real and supernatural resulting in a earth shattering and explosive climax.
Deadbeat Dad sees the welcome return of Police Detective Richelle Dadd in this second instalment of the Dead Detective series. Richie is now juggling motherhood and a dead end job as she tries to piece together the grisly murders that have the same bearings as the unsolved ritualistic Black Rose murders committed 90 years before. Thankfully she still has Bull McGuinness on hand to help as well as her ghostly boyfriend, Wiley, a World War 1 veteran, who was killed in the prime of his youth.
Richie’s father was a welcome addition to the series making it apparent from the start that there was more to him than meets the eye. Baby Tamara was a delight and there were some laugh out loud moments with her partner Malena, whose presence was sorely needed when things threatened to become too dark.
With her house seemingly bugged, a Russian agent bent on recruiting her for some suspicious job overseas as well as the threat of Val re-emerging at any moment, Richie needed all the help she can get.
Happily most of the loose ends from the first book were tied up in this instalment including Riche’s deadbeat ex boyfriend Devon. There’s still lots of potential for the series to continue and I hope the authors return to it at some point. Ideal for fans of paranormal mysteries, noir police detective dramas, zombies, ghosts, gypsie curses, the occult, organised crime.
I listened to this book in audible form which was narrated by Ilyana Kadushin. I was impressed by the way she was masterfully able to bring each character to life with their own unique voice, switching effortlessly between characters and accents.

Disappointing 2nd book
I enjoyed the first book, however this is a disappointing follow up - this goes over a summary of the first book (in far too much detail) then is about the main character feeling sorry for herself and carrying out a lot of naval-gazing - there isn’t much story at all.

Quirky, dark and funny
Perfect narration for this surprising, very funny, and genre-bending (definitely-not-a-romance) -- zombie police procedural, maybe?
For me, the plot was almost incidental, like a good Wodehouse or Evanovich. It was the tragi-comic characters, Detective Dad in particular, that kept me reading, and chuckling, into the night.

I loved revisiting these quirky characters. A really fun series which I hope will continue. Some threads are resolved from the first book. Val, the baby daddy, has to be dealt with. There is a strange Russian woman who wants to get her hands on Richelle. Malena, Richelle's ex partner figures in more prominently. Dickey Dadd who may or may not be dad is a grifter who is couch surfing in Richelle's basement. Devon's arc definitely gets resolved. And baby Tamara is alive (sort of) and kicking and is never out of Richelle's sight, even at work. I don't think I laughed as much at this one but the plot really moved along and there was a lot of action along with the police work.
