About this listen

When Ruby and Verity met as girls, they came from different worlds. Verity was privately educated, living in a beautiful Hampstead home, while Ruby was being raised in extreme poverty. Nevertheless, they became firm friends. However, fortunes are not set in stone, and soon the girls find their situations reversed.

As Ruby goes up in the world, Verity encounters more and more tragedy, but still the girls remain large parts of each other's lives. That is until one day in 1938, when Ruby says the terrible words 'you're dead to me', and it looks like their friendship might be over for good....

*Emotional & Heartbreaking*

*This is set in 1935 and goes through the tragedies of war*

Throughout most of her upbringing Verity has never really known love. Saddled with a cold mother who is virtually a hands off parent who leaves it to the housekeeper who is also stern. On top of that she has the father from hell who makes it his mission to beat her at any cost for trivial reasons. Her mother seems to turn a blind eye to it all as long as her life is full of materialistic things such as a nice home and all the trappings.

(I could relate to the area because I went to Hither Green Primary School and know a lot of the areas mentioned in the book)

One day Verity meets Ruby and there is an instant connection they are from two very different walks of life Verity private school, Ruby the complete opposite but in some ways they share similarities, Verity is educated but Ruby is streetwise and speaks her mind.

A lot happens when her father goes on the run after beating Ruby so badly that the housekeeper intervenes, he is also wanted for embezzling. This means they have to leave everything to go cap in hand to Verity’s aunt, who has no money and works and lives frugally. How will Verity’s Mum cope now she has no husband and no frills? How will it impact on Verity, new school complete different way of life.

Verity’s safety net is Ruby until one day their friendship implodes. Verity has to survive on her own and she is only 16.

Life is grim and Verity endures all sorts of trauma and then it gets so much worse because a very unwelcome blast from the past comes back into her life and will things ever get any better for her? The horror she is subjected to really broke my heart and soon she is in grave danger, will any one intervene to help her……

Lovely narration for an okay story

Really enjoyed the narrator but found the book just okay. It started out a little cliche and then got better and better and then the end seemed to drag on and on.

wartime romance

the story flowed well and the characters were easy to imagine. Easy to pick story up even if only able to listen in short bursts

A Light Book With Historical & Social Nuances!

Ruby and Verity met as children from very different worlds.

Verity, educated privately and apparently living in a happy home, in Hampstead.

Ruby came from a poorer and darker world.

Fortune turns their worlds upset down & through the background of war we see how their stories develop as they become, not children, but young women of accomplishment.

Superb reader!

A winding story of friendship, hurt and love

What a journey of life Verity and Ruby travelled. Pearce brings us on a tale of two very different girls from different walks of life. Each finding their journeys to require them to make great changes and courageous decisions. An excellent and compelling tale.
