Summary

The fifth Shetland novel.

A journalist working a story. Now his murder is a headline....

When the body of a journalist is found in a traditional Shetland boat, Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted in to head up the investigation.

Jimmy Perez has been out of the loop, but his local knowledge is needed, and he decides to help the inquiry. Originally a Shetlander, the journalist had left the islands years before to make a name for himself in London, leaving a scandal in his wake. He had few friends in Shetland, so why was he back?

When Willow and Jimmy dig deeper, they realise that he was chasing a story that many Shetlanders didn't want to come to the surface. One that must have been significant enough to kill for....

Dead Water is the fifth book in Ann Cleeves's best-selling Shetland series - a major BBC One drama, starring Douglas Henshall.

Predictable stuff. The tv series is so much better

I love the BBC Shetland series but the books are disappointing. They're formulaic and not especially well written. People in Shetland seem to spend so much time drinking tea and coffee it's a wonder they aren't permanently on the toilet. And the accent of the series narrator wanders all over the place. In later books the lady detective from the Western Isles sounds as if she's from southern England and the inconsistent pronunciation of the Shetlands' capital is infuriating.

Too long and convoluted

I enjoy AC's adaptations for TV, but this book was too long a listen.

Poor narration

The narration is really disappointing with many of the Shetland place names irritatingly mispronounced, including the main character.
