Summary

A dam breaks. A body rises from the flood.

Hidden for decades, can this small town face the secrets that will surface?

**THE TIMES CRIME BOOK OF THE YEAR*

**SUNDAY TIMES CRIME BOOK OF THE MONTH**

Young detective Nell Buchanan uncovers a deadly, decades-old mystery at the heart of her rural hometown in this stunning thriller from award-winning author Chris Hammer.

Newly-minted homicide detective Nell Buchanan returns to her hometown, annoyed at being assigned a decades-old murder - a 'file and forget'.

But this is no ordinary cold case, her arrival provoking an unwelcome and threatening response from the small-town community. As more bodies are discovered, and she begins to question how well she truly knows those closest to her, Nell realises that finding the truth could prove more difficult - and dangerous - than she'd ever expected.

The nearer Nell comes to uncovering the secrets of the past, the more treacherous her path becomes. Can she survive to root out the truth, and what price will she have to pay for it?

Gripping and atmospheric, Dead Man's Creek is a stunning multi-layered thriller from Chris Hammer, the award-winning author of Sunday Times Crime Book of the Year Scrublands (2019) and Times Crime Book of the Month Opal Country (January 2022).

Fantastic

I was hooked from the start. Totally transported into rural Australia with the authors descriptive details. Add to this a great story which transports you from the present day back to World War 2, giving insights into that war from an Australian point of view, the results are a great book, made even better by the twists and turns of the storyline. The narrator was very good as well.

Excellent narration. Great story.

This may well be Hammer's best work yet. Atmospheric and thrilling. I was gripped. Utterly brilliant, a darkly simmering mystery. An Australian Where The Crawdads Sing. Excellent, truly top-notch narration from Lockie Chapman. Well worth a credit.. Excellent audiobook.

Same book as 'The Tilt"

Great book but just be careful, there is another Chris Hammer called 'The Tilt' which is identical . This is not the first time this has happened.

Favourite Chris Hammer book, so far!

I’ve found this performer to be a bit over the top on a previous book, but he’s perfect doing this one! The story is great, as my dad would say, ‘the author spins a good yarn’. It’s completely engaging, and really interesting, too. It sounds like the author has well researched all of the historical parts. Off to buy another of his books now.

Chris Hammer at his best!

This novel has the depth, detail level, multilayered story lines, family interactions and surprising outcomes similar in their gripping quality and complexity to Hammer’s best works. It’s no easy listening with the number of characters involved and their connections to be remembered but it’s worth the effort. The setting, tough outback life, Nell’s family’s links to the past and how it all comes together in the end make it a brilliant listen.

Full Tilt Phenomenal

Never heard of the author, nor the book, nor the narrator, bought as a two for one half asleep. What can I say. A beautifully woven, wonderful journey into an incredibly detailed past upon past upon past yet set very much in the present. Sometimes, gentle, other times harsh, all the time brought to life by colourful descriptions of a land I know next to nothing about. The forests of NSW and the Murray River and the history surrounding them are expertly brought to vivid life in the hands of a gifted writer. The people, today, 50 years ago and 30 years before that, all coalesce in a beautiful, poignant and finely constructed story that had me looking forward to the next car drive so I could listen to the yarn unfold. But more than the written word was the incredible spoken word of the narrator. His voice, slow, determined and easy, fast became a character in its own right only adding to the rythmn and tone of the story. A perfect match. This random, cheapskate 2for1 purchase is now my favourite Audible purchase and in my top ten books. Thanks Audible, thanks narrator type bloke and thanks Chris for 14hrs of outback joy. 10/10
