Summary
Das Schiff mit dem Namen "Esperanza" nimmt auf jeder Fahrt von Europa nach Amerika einige illegale Auswanderer mit, die aber niemals im Bestimmungshafen ankommen, von denen man nie wieder etwas hört. Der Sohn des Kapitäns, der seinen Vater seit 13 Jahren sucht, mustert als Leichtmatrose auf der "Esperanza" an und erlebt, was mit den Auswanderern geschieht. Der gewissenlose Kapitän lässt die blinden Passagiere aus Gewinnsucht auf einer Sandinsel aussetzen, die bei Flut immer vom Meer überspült wird.
