Summary
Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in the new novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense, and takes on a case of death imitating art...
It was a stab in the dark.
On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan's neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel's best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanel's blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional.
Then, as Eve Dallas puzzles over a homicide that seems carefully planned and yet oddly personal, she receives a tip from an unexpected source: an author of police thrillers who recognizes the crime - from the pages of her own book. Dallas doesn't think it's coincidence, since a recent strangulation of a sex worker resembles a scene from her writing as well. Cops look for patterns of behavior: similar weapons, similar MOs. But this killer seems to find inspiration in someone else's imagination, and if the theory holds, this may be only the second of a long-running series.
The good news is that Eve and her billionaire husband Roarke have an excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace with their cat, Galahad, reading mystery stories for research. The bad news is that time is running out before the next victim plays an unwitting role in a murderer's deranged private drama - and only Eve can put a stop to a creative impulse gone horribly, destructively wrong.
From the author of Echoes in Death, this is the latest of the edgy, phenomenally popular police procedurals that Publishers Weekly calls "inventive, entertaining, and clever."

Meh.... No character progression, boring plot.
I've read and listened to the entire "in death" series. Dark in Death never really lived enough to die. JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts) simply didn't seem to have any real interest in writing this novel. No character progression, except perhaps for Nadine and her new squeeze. Overall the crew of characters plodded along with their day-to-day lives. As for the plot, I'd hazard a guess that Nora Roberts receives similar fan mail on a regular basis. She or perhaps her agent or editor suggested using the fan mail, particularly the creepy/stalker/wannabes as the basis for the novel in this series. I'd hope the author would begin to explore Dallas' growing supernatural gifts to be in touch with death; get more dept about what's it's like to be dead from her murder victims during and after the investigations; a move to Dallas & Roarke starting a family; Delia & McNab either having a huge fall-out or alternatively accidentally getting preggers; more on Roarke's shady past; more sci-fi! Anything would be better than Dark in Death.

I loved this story
I have seen reviews saying the book was boring but I don't agree. I just love all the characters so much and I liked that everyone was so funny and familiar with each other. I enjoyed this one so much I'm going to start it again straight away. I loved all the at home parts in the library and with Galahad. I was right about who Nadine hired as her intern and I am glad about that character making future appearances. I think that Peabody should be advancing a bit more in her role really though. She always seems one step behind Eve and is still ooohing and aaahing in shops over pretty things instead of being a bit more of a leader in her job. I still like her though. If you're reading this as your first In Death book then it might seem tame but if you're a fan and have read them all then I would think you would love this one too. I do.

I love Eve Dallas!
I don’t care what anyone says - J.D. Robb is a genius. Eve Dallas solves the cases with a methodical detailed look at all information and clues. Roark a billionaire loves helping his wife dropping his business and planet purchases to be an expert consultant with benefits. Their relationship has grown so much in the series and just gets better. Peabody, McNabb, Feeney and the murder team are still as personable as homicide can allow. I adore Bella and Mavis and see them being friends for the rest of their lives. More more more! Susan you are the freakin best.

Just a bit too BORING for me.
I’ve read every book in the In Death series, many numerous times and I enjoyed them all however, the last few books have been somewhat disappointing. I found this one to be just BORING and lacking the luster and punch of JD ‘s earlier books. If it wasn’t for the narration of Susan Ericksen who is absolutely brilliant in the Series, I would suggest not to waste your credit. However, I would pay to have Ms. Ericksen read recipes, I think she’s that good, and she definitely saves whatever semblance of a good story there is here. That being said I am still a huge fan and anxiously await the next In Death installment to be published and hope Eve Dallas has a little more challenging and exciting crimes and criminals to bring to justice. I’m hoping the rumors that JD Robb may have ghost writers is just that, rumors, but there has definitely been a change in storylines and writing technique. Let’s wait see what September brings.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat
I was really hoping for a new twist, plot, change or some deviation in the series. I didn't get it. There are over 40 books in the series and I have listened to or read them all. Unless there is a dramatic change in the series I am not sure I will continue with it. I struggled through this book. I found myself day dreaming at times. The only part that I found myself laughing was at Bella's part. Eve doesn't seem to evolve at all. When will Peabody become a more independent detective able to solve her own cases? Will Baxter ever get promoted? At least we see a hint of Nadine finally becoming serious about a relationship and take on an intern with the possibility of adding some new interest. As far as the killer in this book...there have been better. I love Roark but there was nothing new there either. Overall, I was disappointed in this book. Writers shoyld evolve in their writing and I didn't feel that with this book.

Dark in death
As usual the book was well written but not as edgy as some of her earlier works. I found the story disappointing.
I think the author should postpone the next publication date and take the time off to research a story taken from the headlines of 2017 and adapt it for Lt
Dallas.
Miss Robb needs her groove back.

What's going on?!
This is a difficult review to write. I am a huge fan of this series....I always count down to the release dates every February and September....wish for novellas in between and, no matter what, any book in this series is an automatic pre-order. All of that said, this one was a bit of a let down IMHO. I've seen several reviewers say the same for the last 2-3 books and, sadly, this time I'm joining their ranks. Usually, I can't put these books down and will finish in one sitting; it took me 5 days to finish this one because it just wasn't up to the normal "In Death" standard. I started it the second I got the email
From audible that my pre-order was available....around 1am. I stopped several times and listened to and finished other books before coming back to this one. That's unheard of! This one just didn't have the usual action, drama, humor, character growth and chemistry between same that we, the fans, have come to love from this series. One thing that hasn't changed is the narration....FABULOUS! Susan Ericksen is the reason I became addicted to audible books! She is my original favorite narrator. If she narrates it, I'll listen to it!
Overall, outstanding narration and I enjoyed the book...it's just not the excellent, 5 star story that I'm used to from this author. I will still pre-order in September and hope this was just a fluke...fingers crossed!

Engrossing
This is book number 46 in the Death Series. It is amazing that Robb keeps coming up with fresh ideas. She has not repeated a story line as of yet. In this story Dallas is investigating murders which the killer is copying from a mystery novel.
The book is well written. The plot is interesting. I enjoy the various characters in the series. I never get bored as Robb uses different characters in each of her books. Robb is making Eve Dallas more complex with each volume. The pace is fast and the suspense builds throughout the story. While reading this story I had a feeling that Robb had fun with an author of police procedurals as the catalyst of the story. I found the discussion of how an author goes about choosing a nom de plume quite interesting. I enjoyed Galahad, the cat, as he played a bigger role in this story.
The book is thirteen and a half hours. Susan Ericksen does an excellent job narrating the series. Ericksen is an actress, author and Earphone winning audiobook narrator.

Dwindling in Death
This series has gone downhill so far that is breaks my heart. It is so surface level now- far from the rich characters and relationships we used to expect. The murder case was boring. It has turned into nothing but a formula. The criminal apprehension at the end was so far/fetched-a desperate attempt to add any level of interest to this super boring, go nowhere installment. I will be returning for my credit and waiting for a library copy in the future.

Okay
I love the in death series. I liked the book, because I love the series, I totally enjoyed the part where Galahad was upset with Eve because he smelled a dog on her. Of course you love the interaction between Roarke & Eve and the rest of the gang. There are some familiarities, like Sommerset is on winter vacation. The biggest thing that bothered me is the voices are off a bit. I had to go and look and make sure it was Susan Ericksen. At times the voices are off to me. She still did a good job, but it was off a bit. all in all, the book hit all the marks for me but it was not a 5 star in my opinion. Will I keep reading/listening, of Course. the book was still enjoyable, it's not one of her best. I can't wait for the next one in September.
