Story
For at least 10,000 years, something has been destroying alien civilisations across the galaxy. And now it’s coming for us. In the 25th century, the two biggest corporations in history are racing outwards, far beyond the boundaries of human space, scattering settlements and habitats as they go. And they’re making a lot of money doing it. But an ARTOK company station has been destroyed and all its inhabitants slaughtered, and now the Anglo-Russian company has been drawn into interstellar war with its historic rival Nippon Deutsch.

Story
More than a decade after the Confederated Earth Forces were defeated, their commanding general, a boyhood protegee, lives in exile and disgrace. His life on an isolated farm is forever changed when two strangers show up at his homestead, and the war comes crashing back down on him. The problem, though, remains the same. How do you fight an enemy that is technologically superior and holds the high ground?
Summary
A military science fiction thriller portraying a dystopian future of corporation greed, exploitation, and deadly secrets.
It started as just another assignment.
Invited by big-hitting corporation ARTOK, combat journalist David Chambers is visiting the planet Parnassus to report on the “Human Enhancement Program” when he witnesses the unthinkable: the crash site of an alien ship.
The huge structure contains alien bodies and, more importantly, alien technology. But before Chambers can digest the scene, a rival corporation invades, and Chambers barely escapes with his life.
Chambers retreats to the safety of his habitat of Orchard accompanied by Richter and his team, but he’s unaware of the extent of the corporation’s reach. On their arrival, they’re arrested. Mysteriously, only Chambers is released, but not before he’s threatened into silence
Richter, however, needs to be heard. His avatar reaches out to Chambers with harrowing tales of special forces, secret missions, violence, and trickery, resulting in the creation of half-humans, half-machines - cyborgs like himself. Richter recruits Chambers to tell his story and expose the terrifying truth of the corporations’ despicable plans for humanity.
But with billions of dollars at stake, the two corporations can’t let the story break and will do everything in their power to keep their secrets safe.

An action packed mystery
The future described in the story isn't a dystopia, its just a rather murky. I recieved a review copy of this book which reveals the strain on an Earth reaching for the stars, balancing a corporate dominated world, a government supersoldier programme, radical terrorists, and the unknown threats hiding between the stars.
The book does this very well, feeling very realistic in its portrayal of the future and I enjoyed it very much. The narration is also very good.

Gripping!
A truly gripping sci-fi!
Two all powerful companies that have the political and military might to match and surpass any existing government are locked in a race to colonise human space. A journalist manages to get caught up amongst it all after realising things aren't adding up. He starts questioning the motives behind the companies space race and seeks to get to the bottom of it. It carries great tension and the world building is fantastic. Going to be listening to the second book, asap!
I loved how the book brought in several different pov's, doing so in a unique way. This was reflected in the narration superbly and really drew me in. The narrator matched the pace and tone of the book; dark and brooding, and gave the characters all an individual flavour.
I received a copy free in agreement of an honest review.

Good mix of military and political
This book involves the story of a group of enhanced soldiers and a journalist. The soldiers and the journalist are at the pawns of a government that really does not want them; but is forced to keep them in case of need. The world building and the interplay is exceptional. The narrator has multiple voices for the characters but displays no emotion and is close to monotone.
This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

Interesting take on Human/Machine Evolution
This book was an interesting take on the progression of humans to becoming enhanced by cybernetics. While the book described how people started became enhanced, it also went into a lot of detail into the society dynamics between the fully natural and those who became cybernetically enhanced.
This book starts a little slow in order to build background, and the British narration needed to be sped up a bit to keep me going. I'd recommend making sure you pick up both this book and the next one in order to really get into the story. It is near the end of this book and throughout the second where you become involved with the characters and excited to hear what comes next.

Military SciFi
This book is not what I expected. I loved the beginning even if it was slow but then it changed.
He (Chambers, the main character) is shown what happened to the cyborg. It is this part that I did not like so much because it is not about Chambers but the special forces and what they went through. It felt like two different stories. I would have liked it if Chambers was more involved then he just seeing what happened to the team.
This is a personal opinion and other might love it. It is still OK and an interesting story but I would have liked it more if it was done a different way.
Would I look up the next book in the series? Yes I would. I still liked the plot and it would interesting to see what happens next.

A great start to the series!
I had not heard or read JCH Rigby before but I thought this was a really good listen. Two corporations racing to colonize space hide a deadly truth but David Chambers and Richter are out to expose it. Deadly secrets, corporate greed, and a journalist at the wrong place at the wrong time trapped in the middle. Multiple POV's make for a very tense and intriguing story line that keeps you engaged till very end. If you are looking for your next great listen, give this book a listen.

Narration made this a difficult listen for me.
I'd not heard of, or read anything from Rigby before endeavoring into this series. The book itself was pretty good. I liked the characters and progression of the story, but the entire time I was keenly aware of the slow paced and almost monotonous drone of the narrator. It made it very difficult to stay engaged at times. I was given this book as a free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
