I really loved seeing the development of the relationship between Belle and Howl. Small consessions on both parts, learning about each others personalities as well as worlds. The growing mutual respect and affection between them has plenty of stumbling blocks and misunderstandings along the way and both Belle and Howl have monsters of their own that they alone can conqure.
When Belle befriends the runt of the pack Spinner and he plays pretend that he doesn't understand what she is saying until Howl returns and chides him, just a little but mostly laughs with him, is such a warm sweet moment and shows Belles already accepted place in the pack. Which only makes it more deverstating when Jean, the true monster, kills Spinner to use to his own advantage. Belle is smart and independent and a little bit stubborn but so warm you instantly love her, although shocked at the situation she finds herself in she becomes accustom to it quickly and slowly starts to find her own sense of self.
Howls childlike excitement and acceptance of the pack and the new life he is learning about with really makes you warm to him, his relationship with the wolves in his pack is so honest and strong. His determination to learn human things to make Belle happy and his complete acceptance of any and all choices she makes makes him something special.
When Belle is forced into an even darker situation she fully relinquishes to the power of the wolf as she feels in the form she can defend all that is important to her, everything she couldn't protect as a girl, she can fight as a wolf. She struggles to find a way forward with the two versions of herself that now exist within her, a struggle shown the best in the epilogue which deals with the very real trauma that she has been left with after all she endured with Jean. In a form of what can only be described as post natal depression Belle is haunted by the ghost of Jean of her own making, the man may be dead and gone, but the memory of him and all he did and said still haunts her and she is left helpless, not knowing how to fight him. until she accepts the help from the last person she would have thought would understand, Jean's mother, who is sorry for all her son has done to a girl she has known all her life. in talking to Belle she helps soothe some of her fears and chase off the ghost for a while. it isn't until Belle finally confides in Howl, who is just wonderful in his acceptance and acknowledgement of her fears and helps her find a way to work through them, finding solutions that stem from Belle herself and help her face the monstrous ghost and banish him forever.
I really enjoyed the dual narration throughout, adding the third voice for Jean was a nice addition too, adding so much more depth to the characters.
