Summary

Standing at the crossroads - the Mississippi crossroads of Robert Johnson and the devil's infamous meeting - Mark Radcliffe found himself facing his own personal crunch point. Aged 60, he had just mourned the death of his father, only to be handed a diagnosis of mouth and throat cancer.

This momentous time in his life, and being at the most famous junction in music history, led Radcliffe to think about the pivotal tracks in music and how the musicians who wrote and performed them - from Woodie Guthrie to Gloria Gaynor, Kurt Cobain to Bob Marley - had reached the crossroads that led to such epoch-changing music.

In this warm, intimate account of music and its power to transform our lives, Radcliffe takes a personal journey through these touchstone tracks, looking at the story behind the records and his own experiences as he goes in search of these moments.

Such an enjoyable romp though multiple genres of music littered with fascinating trivia as well as details about pivotal moments in modern music.

Mark without Lard or any Graceland gluttony

Great book, well researched and funny. Marks oration is perfect as he weaves great images of key points in musical history with his trademark humour. Learnt lots with a smile on my face.

Great Storyteller

I've always liked Mark's sense of humour which is probably required in regard to some of the 'facts' included.
This is a fascinating book that leaps off at tangents much in the style of Bill Bryson although they generally don't stray far from the realm of music.
Being only a few days younger than Mark, it's hard for me to know if it would suit all ages but I don't know why not.
I look forward to his next book.

A fine journey.

Thoroughly entertaining, interesting, compelling, funny and well worth a listen.
It took me a while to appreciate Robert Johnson or Cream. When I finally "got it" a whole new world opened up. This book captures that world in glorious depth and still gives due praise to my lads...the Beatles.

coloured in the black and white history of music

I really enjoyed it. Took me on a journey, but also chatted to me on the way. Loved the facts and really coloured in music history for me. Would loved to seen the travel map across USA he took!
