This is the story of cowboys in Arizona who, after the Civil War, discovered dinosaurs and fought to save their ranches. It is a tale of dinosaur hunters with Winchesters and Henry rifles. You never learned about things like this in grade school, because the teacher was too scared to tell you about it.

But now you have Cowboys & Dinosaurs, a dime Western novelette by Bill Ciccotti. These stories happened. Or so I have been told by an old Yuma Apache. I came across him in the Arizona desert many years ago. I was searching for gold up in the Superstition Mountains when he stumbled into my camp. He was very dehydrated and deranged; nevertheless, he knew a lot of facts and some strange tales of the old West, particularly Arizona.

I shared coffee and bean stew with Jim Silver Knife, and he told me his tale. Again, I reiterate, this is pure fiction. Or perhaps it may be embellished truth. He was gone when I awoke the next morning. I don’t know if what he told me was true. But he did leave me a heavy, baseball-size, solid gold nugget. It was wrapped in some light but strong leather membrane type of skin.
