Summary

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a scream.

In the remote mountains of Northern Alaska, Dr. Riley Middleton and her team of archeologists discover a burial site containing mummified remains dating to the last ice age. None of them notice the warning carved into the entrance or realize that the tomb had been deliberately sealed from the outside until they’ve already released a virus that turns ordinary people into murderous monsters. But there’s something even more terrifying inside...something ancient...something unspeakably evil.

Meanwhile, strange events are happening all across the country. A young girl in Washington begins drawing pictures of crime scenes, including details she can’t possibly know. In Maryland, a researcher finds the physiological cause of psychopathy in the brain of a mass murderer. A college student in New York develops precognitive abilities. In Michigan, a federal agent collars a serial killer whose murders continue unabated. And an anthropology professor in Massachusetts notices graffiti featuring the same cryptic designs that the Anasazi left on the walls of their abandoned cliff dwellings.

Once the deadly contagion reaches the contiguous United States, it spreads like wildfire through the population centers. With the infected running rampant through the streets, killing everyone in their way, a Hopi elder sets out from the Arizona desert to gather the survivors for a final battle that will determine the fate of humanity.

Gripping!

A gripping, compelling read that had me absorbed from the start, unable to put it down for long, The plot had plenty of twists and turns, I can't wait for the next one.

Long but good

Starts out from the beginning of the SHTF. Lot of detail, lot of delving into the characters, but I never skipped any or got tired of the story. A well worth it read. Virus and ancient spirits mix it up for this apocalypse.

Not a good reader

This could be a great read, but the reader is either whispering or yelling. Someone teach this guy how to read with expression.
The story could be great, but way too much technical details.

Super long but super good

It's super long but if you want to get lost in excellent storytelling, this book is for you. McBride weaves excellent detail and character development with his plot. Builds suspense like no author I've ever read (not even my own books). Leaves you asking "what would I do in that situation". It's a real experience and you experience how everything looks, feels, sounds and tastes. I can't wait to listen to the other books in the saga.

Tedious

Too many characters to keep up with. Too much scientific jargon that most people would find boring and tedious. I’m a retired MRI tech and even though I knew a lot of what they were talking about it became overload. Started out really great and then I couldn’t keep up with all the characters.

Excellent narration!

The many twists and turns of this book were only made better by the excellent narration! So many unique characters, all played beautifully by the gifted, Gary Tiedemann.

End of the world

When I started listening to this audiobook it took me a little while to get into the story. I found it to be a very interesting book about the end of the world as we know it. They also doesn’t very good job of the details. It does jump around a little bit heavy rewind to hear what they were talking about. I did find that I really enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next story.
The narrator does a very good job with the voices of the characters which makes it a little bit easier to understand who is talking I recommend this audiobook.

Terrible!

Do not waste a credit on this book! The people that rated this book highly and wrote glowing reviews must have never read or listened to a good book before. The writing is not good. The characters all deserve to die because they suck. They all cry and mope and fall asleep as if they suffer from narcolepsy. Very very redundant you actually don’t get much even that it’s 20 hrs long. Because he constantly goes back over things. To make the experience even worse the narrator horrible! Constantly whispering and then yelling. Among other terrible things. I will avoid this narrator like the plague , he could make you hate your favorite book.
