Summary

Revenge takes you nowhere, but love takes you where you should be.

After losing his hearing while firing a cannon during the Civil War, Cody came to Great Bend to nurse his ailing aunt, who dies and leaves him a wealthy man. The people in town, especially the sheriff, treat Cody with cruelty, as they call him deaf and dumb. They refuse to allow him into town to buy food and necessities.

Along comes Iris to Great Bend to become the sheriff’s mail-order bride. When she sees how cruel he treats Cody and how he encourages the town to act the same, she is shocked. How can she marry such a man? Cody and Iris become friends, but then discover there was more behind the sheriff’s behavior than Cody’s handicap. Cody and Iris fall in love, but both are afraid to confess it to the other. The sheriff wants revenge and manages to separate them, perhaps forever. He sends Iris far away, where Cody can never find her. Or can he?

Cody & Iris!

Barbara Goss always wins my heart with her wonderful stories. This one is no exception. Iris has come to Great Bend to marry the sheriff. She is determined to get to know him prior to their marriage to make sure his character is what he has impressed upon her. But after seeing how he treats, Cody, the quiet, deaf, hermit as he is known, she knows the sheriff is not the man for her. Cody and Iris become friends, and slowly they fall in love. But is it really that easy? Will the sheriff just let her go? Will Cody be able to keep her safe? This small town story pulled me back in time and had me picturing it all in my mind as it was happening. It has a bit of friendship, a budding love story and some suspense to keep it all exciting and flowing. Loved this listen and always look forward to more.

Jamison Walker brings this story to life. His voice is perfect for the historical romance, as he creates the world with his array of voices. I enjoyed his performance and will be watching for more of his releases.

… a sweet story

Cody's Cure was such a sweet story. I must admit that what drew me to it was Cody's character and description in the blurb (he's deaf after working in the artillery during the war.) As seems to be the case with Barbara Goss' books, they may be on the shorter side of things, but they sure pack a lot. I liked Iris's sweet disposition and willingness to help others (from intervening in how people from town treated Cody, to her friendship with the old lady as well as Maria.) There's also drama with the sheriff (since this is the first time I've seen a sheriff cast as the evil character), a feud and hidden motives going on, sickness, and other things on the road towards HEA for these two. While this book has some Christian content (prayers, Bible verses, and conversations), I'm not sure I'd agree with the character's attitude of applying the Bible to some but not to everyone (this is mostly at the beginning of the book.)

The narrator was good with the voices of Cody and Iris, managing to bring them both to life. His performance was good, and he definitely pulls off characters' voices from different group ages.

Overall, a Sweet Romance story, perfect for people looking for a shorter read, or fans of the author, narrator, and/or the marriage of convenience trope. ~ 4 stars
