Summary

From leading MP Chris Bryant, the inside story of misconduct in parliament and how we can help solve it.

The extraordinary turmoil we have seen in British politics in the last few years has set records. We have had the fastest turnover of ministers in our history and more MPs suspended from the House than ever. Rules have been flouted repeatedly, sometimes in plain sight. The government seems unable to escape the brush of sleaze. And just when we think it’s all going to calm down a bit, another scandal breaks.

As Chair of the Committees on Standards and Privileges, Chris Bryant has had a front-row seat for the battle over standards in parliament. Cronyism, nepotism, conflicts of interest, misconduct and lying: politicians are engaging in these activities more frequently and more publicly than ever before. The result? The work of honest and accountable MPs is tarnished. Public trust is worn thin. And when nearly two thirds of voters think that MPs are out for themselves, democracy is in trouble. It is time for a better brand of politics. Taking us inside the Pugin-carpeted corridors of Westminster, from the prime minister’s office to the Strangers’ Bar, Code of Conduct examines every angle of parliamentary conduct and suggests how parliament might – at last – get its house in order.

Critic reviews

Nobody knows how parliament works – and how it doesn’t – better than Chris. It’s a delight watching him take a bulldozer to the crumbling edifice of parliamentary standards (JAMES O'BRIEN)
Absolutely riveting. I read, I blink, I gasp. Chris Bryant has not only chaired the Standards Committee during its busiest period on record but also has unrivalled knowledge of the history of Parliament. There is no better guide to the extraordinary dereliction of duty of some of his fellow parliamentarians in these unusual times, nor to how we might restore function to the system and trust in the institution (REVEREND RICHARD COLES)
Code of Conduct is a vital part of the fightback against post-truth populism and the damage it has done to our democracy in recent years. Well written, personal, insightful but also brutally factual, it should serve as a wake-up call to all of us – politicians and public alike – that we need major reform of our politics and our political institutions (ALASTAIR CAMPBELL)

Fascinating insights

I got the audio version so I could listen to it while doing monotonous tasks. It had some fascinating insights into the workings of parliament, both current and historical. Chris also has some really credible ideas of how to overall the current processes and fix the major issues. Now it just needs someone in power to take heed and start making the changes he suggests. I won't hold my breath for that though.
It was a genuinely interesting book that was well read and massively helped me get through my boring tasks.

Fascinating & insightful written with integrity

Always felt Chris Bryant to be a man with standards and passion. Both come through in this work. He has attempted to take a balanced apolitical view, but this must have been difficult given the current party has been in power, and therefore in the spotlight, for 13 years. I keep up with political news, but have never read a work on politics, my boredom threshold is very low! However, because of my respect for Mr Bryant (and the fact my mother came from the Rhonda), I gave it a go. Very pleased I did. Couldn't put it down and read it in a day. Didn't agree with everything, but it certainly gave me food for thought. I will need to reread to ensure a full understanding, but that is certainly no hardship. Hopefully, the perspective this lends to our political system will stir things up and open a debate.

Interesting, concise and very well read

The analysis of the problems with parliament was great as was Chris Bryant’s delivery. I liked that the solutions were suggested in the same chapter. It was refreshing that the book was focused and not padded out - it felt like the right number of examples and anecdotes.

An excellent listen.

As I wouldn't be at home to receive the book I decided to get the audible version. I always find Bryant excellent in Parliament. This is him at his best.
