This story follows a forger, an assassin, a paladin and a scholar. Their journey is eventful, the characters are perfectly flawed and it's a joy to listen to.

I love the world T. Kingfisher has created and all it's inhabitants. After reading 'The Saint of Steel' series and now waiting for Book 4 to be released, I started looking at other books by the author and came across 'Clockwork Boys' (Book 1 of 2). I love that it's the same world, the Clocktaurs are referenced in the Saint of Steel books so it's great getting more of an insight in to these mechanical soldiers. I love this rag-tag team of misfits thrown together on what seems like a suicide mission to try and work out the secret of the Clocktaurs.

BOOK 1 has left me eager to start BOOK 2. I'm a little sad that there are just 2 books, because I don't want the story to end, but I'll take what I can get.

T Kingfisher is amazing. I was going to buy book 2 with a credit but realised it’s cheaper to get the kindle and audio attached. I’ll definitely read again. Superb narration too.

A friend pointed me in it’s direction and I am glad they did. A nice mix of fantasy and humour stitched together with a good story.

I'm late 40s, but I love T Kingfishers' imagination. All the details, it's the closest I've found to compare with Harry Potter series for imagination and creativity. I found the tale so well written that I went off and purchased the second before even finishing the first.

Was surprised at the length of book 1 but enjoyed enough that I've already bought book 2

Great first part, but short.

I had read and enjoyed the duology comprising this book and its sequel The Wonder Engine before listening to this audio book, so was already a fan of the story and the author. It’s a thrilling tale of an adventuring party of unlikely but likeable companions who set out on a suicide mission to an enemy city, with plenty of snark, humour, danger, romance and even some horror thrown in. Khristine Hvam’s characterful performance adds hugely to the tale, with distinctive and convincing voices for the characters, including what is now for me the definitive gnole voice that I miss when listening to other T Kingfisher books read by other actors. (Gnoles are intelligent, badger-like people who inhabit Kingfisher’s world of the White Rat, into which this I believe this book is the first foray.) Highly recommended!

I became invested in the characters and curious to thier story and how they wpuld proceeded. I enjoyed the world building amd can't wait for the sequal

Slapstick and juvenile. You can’t trust reviews unless you know who is doing the reviewing. I am guessing younger Teens who enjoy the snarky and superficial. This is obviously the first part of a serialised tale. Everything was left mysteriously unfinished and unexplained. The narrator has an unfortunately whiny voice, perhaps trying to have the characters sound like moaning teenagers, but I found it unpleasant.
I won’t be looking for any more of this authors work.
