Summary

When Laurel West discovers her estranged sister Abby has checked herself into rehab and wants her to take care of her 14-year-old son, she doesn’t hesitate to step in. Abby was there for Laurel a long time ago, and she longs to be able to offer the same. However, as a single woman who still dreams of the fairy tale, Laurel isn’t prepared for teenage Zac’s sullen moods or silent rage. When he’s expelled from school, she decides to take drastic measures and temporarily relocate them to her great aunt’s cottage on the windswept hills of the Orkney islands north of Scotland...about as far as she can run from their problems, but will it be far enough?

From the moment they step onto the island’s shores, everything seems to go wrong...including a run-in with eccentric sheep farmer Archie MacDougall. When Zac gets in trouble at the village pub and is rescued by Archie, Laurel thinks things are only getting worse. But Archie’s suggestion of putting Zac to work on his farm might be the change he needs, and Laurel strikes up a surprising friendship with a man who is about as far from the fairy tale as she can imagine.

Can such an unlikely and impractical love bloom in such a brief moment out of reality? And will two lost and lonely souls find each other at the edge of the world?

Appalling narrative

Narrator ruined a story, irritating accent and dragging of words.
What a shame as irritated rather than adding

Narrator ruined the story

Unfortunately only 10mins in I stopped listening as narrator’s voice doesn’t suit the characters at all & I listen to heaps of books but I couldn’t face listening to rest of book, change narrator please!

Hard to listen to!

Oh my I couldn’t get past chapter one . The narrator sadly is the worst I’ve listened to. Story only gets 1* because I couldn’t finish it.

Nice story but hard to listen to.

I liked the story line but I’m afraid the narrator left me cold. Her almost purring, sultry, plummy voice was a real turn off for me sorry.

Turn the speed up !

This is a lovely story and easier to listen to if you turn the story speed up to 1.2 at the minimum to make the narration less annoying!

How a narrator can ruin a book

Such a shame that this book was read in such a boring flat voice. Her English accent sounded as if she was trying to copy the Queen.

A delightful story

I had to initially get used to the narrator’s speaking style. Her voice then melded into the storyline in a unique way and concluded in an overall
delightful experience. Worth a listen!

Delightful

This was a nice gentle stroll from London to Orkney spanning a year.
Only four main characters so not loads of names to remember. It really was delightful.

Unfortunate DNF

I like this author and have read a few of her series. This one is spoiled by the narrator. I tried 4 chapters and even sped it up to 1.2 x speed. Could save this one for me unfortunately
