About this listen

P.G. Wodehouse, the master of British humor, produced dozens of books and hundreds of short stories in his long and prolific career. But none of his creations has quite captured the world's imagination as much as his bumbling, empty-headed man-about-town Bertie Wooster and Bertie's faithful knight-in-shining-tuxedo Jeeves.

Collected here are some of Wodehouse's most beloved Jeeves-and-Wooster tales - 10 short stories from the anthology Carry On, Jeeves as well as the novel The Inimitable Jeeves - each a master class in comedic writing. Along with Jeeves and Bertie, we are introduced to an entire cast of beloved Wodehouse characters: Bingo Little, James "Corky" Corcoran, Gussie Fink-Nottle, Honoria Glossop, Rockmetteller Todd, and the terrifying and bombastic Aunt Agatha. This collection even contains the one-and-only Wodehouse short story narrated by Jeeves himself.

These two collections are presented here in their original and unabridged form.

the narration is unfortunately annoying and I found myself unable to finish the book

terrible narration

My fault for not checking by listening to a sample but the narrator on this book is more suited to a Horse racing commentary than reading such a brilliant PG Woodhouse classic. The only thing going for this is the brilliance of the story.

Dreadful narration

Why get an American actor whose idea of an upper class English accent is to fully enunciate every word and leave an equal space between them, completely ignoring the nuance and rhythm of Wodehouse's prose - and who allows his native accent to obtrude at random and inopportune moments? It is a travesty and I advise Wodehouse lovers to avoid it like the plague! I feel cheated of my monthly credit.

Why???

I have tried other audiobooks of the same source material, read by more established English actors. But I actually like Kevin Theis's delivery the best. Although other reviewers have criticised the narrator's accent, I find it a good one for the most part, and you'd have to be churlish not to overlook the very occasional slip.

Theis' voice comes across more like a stagey 1980's sitcom actor than a 1920's or 1930's lord. But then, if we're being pedantic, most English actors playing interwar aristocrats don't go "all in" either. Compare Colin Firth's George VI with the real King's radio voice - those clipped, Germanic vowels aren't heard much outside Harry Enfield sketches these days.

Kevin Theis has great comic timing and most importantly, captures the irrepressible energy and verbal acrobatics of Bertie Wooster's narration well. I think Wodehouse wode approve.
