Story
There were always whispers about my roommate at Hillcrest Academy. The wealthiest of the wealthy sent their kids to our boarding school, and Brooke Bennett had been at the top, though I never quite knew why. She was fun and outgoing, but she kept quiet about her family. The only things she showed me were photographs of her brothers. I became fascinated with her second-oldest brother. Kai Bennett. Smoldering. Hypnotic. Alluring. Kai had eyes that pulled me in and a face that haunted my dreams.

Story
Nate Monson was gorgeous, obnoxiously wealthy, and a player. He was also the person who could destroy my world with a single decision. I walked into that bar looking for him. He saw me. I saw him. The chemistry sizzled between us, but no. I hated Nate Monson. I hated him with everything in me, even though my body did not. It didn't matter. Nothing I wanted mattered. He thought I wanted to get laid. What I wanted was for him to disappear. But first, I had to tell him that he had a daughter.

He told me to settle. He asked what was wrong with me. He called me an easy target. That was within minutes when I first met Caden Banks. I labeled him an asshole, but he was more than that. Arrogant. Smug. Alpha. He was also to-die-for gorgeous, and my stepbrother's fraternity brother. Okay, yes I was a little naive, a tad bit socially awkward, and the smallest amount of stalker-ish, but if Caden Banks thought he could tell me what to do, he had another thing coming.

I have loved Channing Monroe all my life. In first grade, he asked for my Trapper Keeper. I hit him in the head with it. Third grade, we were best friends. We kissed in seventh grade. In eighth grade, he turned into a bad boy and the rest was a tumultuous storm. Growing up, the problem was never love for us. Bad times. Good times. There were times when I felt our love in every inch of my body, vibrating, making me feel like it could bring me back to life. The problem was us. The problem is that we're living in two different worlds now. Fallen Crest and its millionaires for me.

He walked into school on his first day and owned it. I guess that's what happens when you're a prick, rich, and you're best friends with the ruling school's king. Also didn't hurt that he's drop-dead gorgeous. That's all fine. I mean, I have nothing to do with them. I'm a loner, invisible, and that's how I wanted it to be. I was even proud of it, until I wasn't. His name is Blaise Devroe. My name is Aspen Monson. He only knew how to get, command, and demand attention. I knew how to do everything but that. I shouldn't have remembered him. He was just a guy who walked through a restaurant. I didn't know his name. We never made eye contact. There was no connection between us at all. But I could feel him. The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview. Well, technically, I’d met him 20 minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment. I yelled. He yelled. After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut. As you might imagine, I was freaked out when I discovered that the rude guy was my potential new boss. Yet he didn’t seem to recognize me. Or so I thought.... Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

I would say Dr. Cruz Costello is my archenemy. But that would require acknowledging one another, which we haven’t done in more than a decade. He’s the town’s golden child. The beloved quarterback-turned-physician. I’m the girl who got knocked up at 16 and now works at a diner. He is Fairhope royalty. I get my monarch dose from tabloid gossip. He’s well-off. I’m...well, off. When our siblings get engaged, Cruz’s parents invite both families to a pre-wedding cruise. Except Cruz and I find ourselves stuck on a different ship from everyone else.

If this arrogant Irish mobster my brother sold my niece to thinks I’m going to play nice over this arranged-marriage BS, he should think again. I don’t care if this match with the Mob will make my brother capo of the Five Families. I don’t care how much money, territory, or power it will gain us. I especially don’t care that the Irishman is the sexiest man I’ve ever seen. I won’t allow my innocent niece to suffer the same way I did. Even if I have to kill him.

Brutal Vows
- By mrs maureen treagust on 08-08-22
Summary
We were on the front lines in a ruthless world, the mafia world. There was nothing soft or glamorous about it. Who you were before no longer mattered. Names didn’t exist. I joined anyway. I had no other choice because they took my sister. Join. Find her. Try and make it out alive.
Then he won me in a poker game. I hated him instantly, thinking he was like my other bosses before him. He wasn’t. He was worse. He wasn’t just cold. He was dead inside. It didn’t matter that he was gorgeous. He was the most lethal thing I’d ever met. He was also the only person who could keep me alive...if he didn’t kill me himself.
This is a 102,000-word mafia/cartel stand-alone. This is the most violent book Tijan has ever written. Trigger warning: references to sexual violence.

Such An Intriguing Story!😲
I found this to be a better book to *read* than as an audio book, for me. It was purely because Ash's internal voice came across much better on the page than in audio. I'm surprised by by this as 'The Not Out-Cast' has a similar amount of internal talking but I loved that audio book and her 'inner voice' came across exactly how I'd read it, that didn't happen with this book, for me!😔
Having said that, this storyline is amazing. It's fast paced and utterly captivating on so many levels. I ended up loving Reyes, who initially seems hateful.🙈 I loved the growth of the characters, especially Ash and Reyes!💘
I would still highly recommend this Audiobook as the story and narrator's are very good, especially the male!🎧🌟

Wow what can I say about this book without giving anything away….it was awesome. I was unsure for a while about reading this but once I started I was hooked! It was full of drama, suspense and intrigue. It’s one of those books that will stay with you for a long time. Narration was first class. It enhances the whole experience of the story. I’m hoping maybe one day Roman may get his story told now.

Slow start, but once it started moving, it was good. But, then it started to get confusing. Following chapters felt like I’d skipped a huge chunk, but when I went back, I found that I hadn’t.
I also felt the ending was wrapped up way too fast.

I WAS HOOKED FROM THE START
She stepped into this brutal Mafia world for one reason - to find her sister.. but along the way she’d been used, abused, exchanged and now won in a game played by the worst.. and the cold-blooded Mafia killer/foot soldier who now held her leash was going to do something crazier. Because, she who went by many names, was going to fall in love with him.. oh, it wasn’t going to be easy, it wouldn’t be fast with its Cartel hurdles and Mafia high-jumps causing daily danger and it won’t come without risks, bullets, bloodshed, tears, tension, suspense and emotional growth and pain. There’s a lot of players on this layered board with their own agendas so flee and/or fight will become the norm.. but it will all be worth it in the end. And so, ‘The Girl’ who could tell if someone was lying or not, slowly became a stone cold Mafia killer’s most precious secret weapon.. a weapon he protected and loved above all others. She’d eventually became a cherished lover he’d die for, torture and kill for.. because she had her secrets too.
From the first chapter to the last this story had me.. as the body count continued to rise.. as enemies became everything to each other.. as character-growth had a killer find his heart and, as a pawn took the board, captured a Kingpin, crossed lines and willingly gave her heart. Their chemistry and connection was plain to see and their group of trusted men was small.. but together they freed sisters, made alliances, weaved webs and accomplished a lot.
Worth a credit? Yes, I was happily hooked from the start with its intrigue and suspense and with its ‘just sex’ relationship which turned into so so much more. There’s a good cast of characters, it’s entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. Narration.. hum, it was ok but Connor didn’t come in until chapter 34 for some intermittent dual POV chapters.

Too unbelievable for me
First of all, the story lost me at "Tik Tok". Once I heard the reference, I was done. I pushed through the whole book though and just found it too unbelievable to go with. There were just too many decisions that the male character made that had me thinking, there is No Way a real mafioso would allow that. I tried but unfortunately, it just wasn't for me. I found it corny and was just kinda bleh.

I just love mafia romance
I’ve been desperate for Tijan to write more mafia romance, and here we are. Finally. Canary it is. Note though. This is not a pretty mafia romance. It’s very much a gritty mafia drama with a side of romance. I flipping loved it. I listened to the audio version, and CJ Bloom was superb as ‘Ashley’. Then we have Raiz, our mafia frontman, narrated by Connor Crais (a new to me narrator), who was so perfect in the role, he made me believe he was actual mafia. The story of course had a few twists and turns, lots of action (and violence), betrayal and romance. Ashley was the perfect girl with attitude and I loved the fact that she was straight up and honest about herself. No holds barred. I was hooked. Loved it.

Absolutely loved Canary
She’d been in the life a while, trying to find her sister she entered the world of the Mafia, after a few bosses, she was sure she was won in a card game when Raize took her with him.He was a cold hearted killer. The more she learns she realizes she didn’t really know anything because she knew not to ask questions, but she heard everything and Brooke/Ash soon learns that she’s being used as a pawn in a very dangerous game. Something starts to wake inside her & Raize knows exactly what she needs, one night turns into two but is that all it is, she knows Raize sees a lot of women.Raize was the one man that everyone had feared, and he would protect her with his life, and he may have to do that with the people after his Canary. Can Raize save her from those wanting her and what happens when he realises he never wants to let her go. Tijan did an outstanding job writing canary. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire story. The narrator did an amazing job bringing the character to life. I highly recommend everyone to listen to this audiobook

Another great story by Tijan
Another great story by Tijan, I really liked these characters. Ash was a brave, strong woman that gave up everything to find her sister. She has a unique talent that makes her a very valuable asset. I love Raize and I love how he treats Ash. I liked the other characters that are with Ash and Raize and I love the furry member. There is a lot of violence in this book but I don’t feel that it goes into any major descriptions. This book has action, drama, and some pretty hot sex scenes. There were alot of twist and turns, and some shocking secrets that came out. I loved the ending, it was just perfect.

Mafia Romance 3.8 Stars
If you are a fan of Bennett Mafia then you will enjoy Canary. While not my favorite of Tijan's novels, I did stay engaged and interested.
I never quite felt invested in the characters and their relationship so felt like something was missing in the relationship between them and me. I did enjoy them and had a few giggles and laughs. My favorite character was Gus.
I will listen to it again to see if I feel different the second time around and because all Tijan's books are worth a second read.
While Tijan is one of my favorite authors, not all her books can be my favorite, having said that, I highly recommend this book.

Canary is an extraordinary story, and it is big. There are things I want to mention in this review but more importantly, there are things I don’t, because spoiler. Did I say this is a big story?
PERFORMANCE REVIEW & RATING: 5 STARS
I’ve listened to the audio and read the book and now I’m blinking even more. There are details that sometimes slip thru a reading that one might catch when listening to a story and vice-versa. That isn’t exactly what happened with me, but I did come to the realization that when I told you this was a big story, I didn’t know the half of it until I was done with the audio. And, if I’m being honest, I’m going to go out on a limb and say it might have been a bit too big.
This is one of those rare occasions where I can’t honestly say if audio or ebook is a better option. I honestly think they both enhanced by experience with this story in different ways and I’m glad I had the opportunity and means to both read and listen to it.
STORY REVIEW & RATING: 5 STARS
This story is in constant motion. There are moving parts at every turn, which means there are plot points coming at us left and right, least of which is a romance plot. That last part was disappointing as heck for me but it’s a Tijan trait that is constant in her writing as of late. I can’t really fault Tijan for writing exactly how she always writes but I can cry about it in my corner LOL That’s why I say it’s a phenomenal 5 star read but I need to add the disclaimer that it’s a Tijan read so if you don’t know her writing, good luck. Okay, so that’s that on that LOL
Now, the rest of it. It’s a whole lot of story kids, and some of it is literally thrown at you and not developed fully, imo. I have never paused and restarted a chapter so many times in the history of reading than I did for this book. I even did it with the audio after I’d already read the book! The amount of people to keep track of was staggering and then the end/reveal was just *deep breath* … I kept thinking “what am I supposed to DO with all of this??” as I cried for the girl who was then AND is now!!
None of this changes my stance on this book’s 5-star rating. I know there are tons of you who might read this and think I’m crazy but that just means you don’t know Tijan and how she writes. Which brings me to the last thing I want to say. I think Tijan is a unique writer, more than that, she’s one of a kind. That being said, her style and voice are uniquely hers. There are no authors out there that I could say “if you enjoyed so and so, you’d love Tijan”, so tread carefully if you are new to her. I would hate for you to pick up one of her more Tijan(y) books as your first one :) Do with that information what you will!
