Small Vices - Ellis Alves is no angel. But when his lawyer says he was framed for the murder of college student Melissa Henderson, Alves looks to Spenser for help. From Boston's back streets to Manhattan's elite, Spenser and Hawk search for suspects, including Melissa's rich-kid tennis-star boyfriend. But when a man with a .22 puts Spenser in a coma, is the chance for justice dead?

Excellent reading of Spenser
Reynolds is great casting to read Spenser. Some inflections miss the meaning, but the characterisation is excellent. The background noise in the first book is annoying; but still a good listen.
To those reviewers who think these novels are just tough guys swearing: you're right, they are that; but they are also so much more, if you care to listen and think about it.

Great value
Great books and a fabulous reading by Burt. What a shame he didn't play Spencer on screen. Rare for a Hollywood start to put as much effort into reading an audiobook. Very enjoyable

Perfect Escapism
Three (!) Spenser stories filled with Parker’s wonderfully drawn minor characters and clever dialogue. Satisfying performance by Reynolds who perfectly embodies the loveable, tough sleuth who always gets his man, And his woman. Loved the audio version as much as I did when I first read the books,

A match made in heaven
My first Robert Parker novel. Lots of clever dialogue. Lots of mystery. Some action, some romance. Unlike other single PI heroes, Spenser is in a steady relationship with a single professional woman who loves him. She’s a staple, like Hawke his sidekick.
For most of the stories, Spenser is completely mystified until near the end. There is not the preoccupation with weaponry and ammo types common to novels of this type, tho Parker gives details to differentiate gins used by sidekicks and adversaries.
Parker might have written these novels for Burt Reynolds: his speaking style, humour and general attitude exactly match those of Spenser the protagonist.
Complaints: music fades in towards the end and at the beginning of each chapter but it’s rather loud and goes on for far too long making it difficult to hear the narration.

Poor sound
Never listened to the Spencer book before and have to say enjoyed them, however the sound quality is pretty darn awfull at the beginning of Chance, it got better but still had to turn the volume up, missed the first two to three chapters due to bad sound quality.
However did enjoy them albeit a wee bit predictable, (but that maybe as I read to many detective stories) they are funny and nice enough stories. Mr Reynolds has a pleasant enough voice, for audible, but I think to soft this maybe the reason for the sound quality. (but this is not something I am used to with audible, it feels the books are rushed to put together as a previous revieuw says)
Due to sound quality I have taken 2 stars off as it really does not help the books. I will listen to another but due to the number of the book can not start at the beginning really, maybe listeners advice on this.

Bob Parker would've approved.
I've read all of Robert B Parker's Spenser novels since I discovered them in the 70's. These were my first audiobook versions. Burt Reynolds is perfect, though the sound quality is less so at times. Burt was grade A Hollywood acting royalty and he did a tremendous job of bringing these books to life. It is such a shame he didn't do more. He would've been a brilliant Spenser on the big screen.

Foul language all the way .
The foul language in the first few chapters so sickened me that I decided not to listen to any more of the first book and didn’t even start the other two , as to the narrator l must say I’ve never heard any narrator read this filth with such relish . Awful just awful .
