A Mixed Bag
This series, for me, has been quite a journey. In terms of quality and overall story. From my previous reviews, by book 3 the series found it groove and just kept on getting better. This book in particular started great, kept my interest with the story throughout it, but the ending felt weak, rushed and unsatisfying.
I definitely think that rather than a 6 part series, the books would’ve been better suited to one long book. I just feel as though there wasn’t so much of an impact at the end of each to always justify being it’s own book. It’s not that I’m expecting big endings, it just feels like endings are one area where Oliver could improve on.
As well, there are times where more important points in the plot aren’t explored enough, and I feel like those could have been fleshed out more not only in this book, but the series.
I did enjoy most of this one, but unlike the last books, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to. There was so much that could’ve been explored and wasn’t: thus just leaving it feeling rushed.
Craig did a great job with narrating this one and his performance helped distract from the weaker points of the writing. Compared to book one, it’s almost like listening to a different narrator entirely.
I enjoyed the series and I would definitely be keen to explore some of Oliver’s other works as experience should bring more confidence in leaning into the interesting plot points rather than touching on them and letting them slide.
