Summary

The sixth novel in Julia Quinn's globally beloved and best-selling Bridgerton Family series, set in Regency times and now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix. Welcome to Francesca's story....

In every life, there is a turning point. A moment so tremendous, so sharp and breathtaking, that one knows one’s life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, London’s most infamous rake, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton.

After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca’s surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere 36 six hours longer - the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin.

But that was then.... Now Michael is the earl and Francesca is free, but still she thinks of him as nothing other than her dear friend and confidant. Michael dares not speak to her of his love...until one dangerous night, when she steps innocently into his arms, and passion proves stronger than even the most wicked of secrets....

Critic reviews

"Julia Quinn's Bridgerton books take all of the classic tropes we know and love...and gives them a thoroughly modern twist. I can't focus on anything else." (Stylist)

Okay

The story started really well but became tedious towards the end, especially the parts where Francesca kept resisting Michael's marriage proposal when she was already compromised. Too many chapters were dedicated to this, should have been less. Otherwise, it was a good story.

Always a great story

Most enjoyable read with excellent narration. Always enjoy the historical story, their manners and their straight laced attitude.

Starts off with a bang... ends with a fizzle

My favourite in the series so far... but that's all down to Michael & his sexiness as Francesca did start annoying me halfway through.

She's lucky he was so persistent & she really doesn't deserve him, but that's all I'll say to avoid spoiling it for anyone.

To say I dislike the ending is an understatement, but that 2nd epilogue merely reinforced how awful I think her character truly is... she's way too self-centered!

One of the better ones

I’ve found the Bridgerton series a bit hit and miss but for me this was definitely one of the better ones. A good depiction of the issues that can crop up around conception. And I was actually able to stay interested in the romantic story arc.

Bridgerton Perfection!

The Bridgerton series thus far, has been riveting, entrancing and thoroughly entertaining, and this audiobook - book 6 - is absolutely fantastic. I cannot praise this story enough!

'When He Was Wicked' bowled me over. I have been on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. It's amazing to me, and testament to the talents of Julia Quinn, that she can keep the quality and intensity of a series going through as many novels as she has, and each book has a new original and absorbing story, while also maintaining the heart and feel of the characters, whose lives run across the whole series. This audiobook could well be my favourite of the series, but honestly they've all been completely wonderful.

Francesca and Michael's story is an unrequited love story, that becomes a love story (with plenty of twists to it), and a hard fought HEA. These two characters navigate their love through a tragic event, and have so much chemistry, yearning, pain and guilt that I just couldn't get enough of them. A special mention to Colin - I loved his character in this novel.

This book was pure joy to listen to. I recommend to all lovers of romantic fiction. The narrator, as always, was amazing to listen to. She really brought all the characters to life.

By far the best book so far

I had started to get tired of the Bridgerton books as the men just got more arrogant, sexist and unlikable but this one really turned it around for me. Love the characters and story is engaging.
