About this listen

Sometimes one moment defines a man.

For homicide detective Mac, it's been a good year. Having Tony to go home to makes him a better cop and a better person. For Tony, it's been hard being in love with a man he can't touch in public. Evasions and outright lying to friends and family take a little of the shine off his relationship with Mac, but Tony is determined to make it work.

As the Minneapolis Police Department moves into a hot, humid summer, Mac is faced with a different challenge. A killer has murdered two blond women, and the police have no real clues. Mac hates to think that another murder may be the only way they'll make progress with the case. But when that murder happens, it hits close to home for Tony. And suddenly Mac faces an ultimatum: Come out into the sunlight and stand beside Tony as his lover, or walk away and live without a piece of his heart.

Glorious

You really feel for Mac and Tony, stuck in the closet because Mac’s situation. Something has got to give and when it does the break up is inevitable and heartbreaking. The author (and narrator) does an excellent job of not forcing the reader to assign blame.
The police case is good (although I was shouting about the wrong witness near the end), but many of the police team are obnoxious and homophobic.
There’s still a way to go for Mac and his work situation but there are plenty more books to read.
The narrator was excellent

This series and JF Harding? Match made in heaven..

🎧🎧🎧 Audio Review 🎧🎧🎧

Another good narration from Mr Harding. Great choice for narrator of this series. Most things he does are top notch, and he features quite a few times on my Awesome Audio narration shelf here on Goodreads.

***Book Review 2013***

For me, a big improvement on the first book of the series, 4.5 stars from me.

The writing was certainly more assured in this book, the characters more rounded and the plot once again was really good. Tony was his usual calm and collected self, strong, helpful, kind and without a doubt head-over-heels in love with Mac. Mac, on the other hand, was still having problems with coming out of that bl**dy closet, and when he discovered that one of the murders he was investigating involved the mother of Tony's godson Ben, it became personal. Family problems ensued and Tony was left trying to justify his attachment to Ben and being challenged by Ben's grandparents.

Eventually, Mac came through for Tony and went to court stating that Tony was a 'fit and proper' person and ought to be allowed to adopt Ben, and 'outted' himself by admitting that he was Tony's boyfriend, but that they'd split because Tony wanted to do everything 'by the book' for Ben, and his own reluctance to come out of the closet.....of course, everyone would now know (including a few of Mac's bigoted colleagues) that he was gay.

In the background of course, we had the murderer and the on-going investigation into who he was, where he was and how the cops could catch him. A lot of Mac's legwork paid off and the net was closing in around the culprit...they found out who he was, and were playing catch-up as to where he was staying until they got a break....Enjoy!!

Excellent

Enjoyed this even more on second listen. J F Harding has to be one of my favourite narrators of all time - just wonderful. Well written, gripping story, great characters. I suspect there will be many rereads of this whole series.

Murder, Mystery and Love

Another enjoyable and captivating story, narrated superbly by JF Harding. I love how Kaje tells the story and weaves together the murder/mystery elements of the plot with the developing relationship between Mac and Tony. There are some tense moments as well as some uplifting ones too. Highly recommended, but listen to book 1 first!

Fantastic Story and Audiobook!

After listening to book one in this series, Life Lessons, back in January I was very happy to learn that the remaining novels in this series were also being produced in audio. Breaking Cover is every bit as gripping as Life Lessons and I was fully invested in the story right from the beginning.

There is so much I’d like to say about this book but I’m afraid it would be too spoiler-y. I’m just going to say that Mac and Tony are pretty much put through a wringer in this one. Their relationship hits some rather big bumps and Mac’s professional life takes some hits. When push comes to shove, Mac surprises himself, and Tony, and does the honorable thing and I was so proud of him.

If you like stories with suspense, family, and relationships I can’t recommend this one highly enough. As with book one, JF Harding did a fantastic job performing the audiobook. His different voices for each character make listening to this story a joy. I can’t wait to listen to the remaining books in this series!

A copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author or narrator.

Decision time

I am a huge fan of stories where one of the characters is deeply in the closet and something finally forces him to make a decision about what is truly important. The plot here where Mac is looking for a killer and suddenly things get really close to Tony is perfect for that. If you've been yelling at Mac to make an open commitment, you'll be happy with this one. J.F. Harding gives an excellent performance. It let's us understand why Mac has been making the decisions he has but also let's us see when things change for him and he realizes what he has to do.

Fantastic story und narrator!

The story of Tony and Mac continues. The two are happy so far, but their relationship has a shortcoming: Mac doesn't want to come out, because he fears that some of his work colleagues won't take it well. He also has to think about his daughter Anna, who spends a lot of time with her aunt Brenda. And Brenda is very religious.
I loved the story of these two. Mac and Tony are believable and sympathetic characters who struggle with the circumstances of their lives.

Mac is a homicide detective and he is on the trail of a serial killer who suddenly gets way too close when someone in their acquaintance is murdered. Now it's up to Tony to decide how to proceed, and he makes a momentous decision that just seems right in this situation. I totally enjoyed both the development of the story and the development of the characters.
The author has a lively writing style that gets the emtions across to the reader well. Yes, it got emotional and I was shaking and cheering along with the two of them.

The story absolutely captivated me from the beginning. This was due in part to the narrator. J.F. Harding did a phenomenal job of narrating. He has a talent for making the listener feel every emotion. He has a very pleasant voice and portrays each protagonist uniquely. And he managed to make an already very good book even better.

Highly recommended! And I'm really looking forward to the next volume!

thrilling

...but honest, and dives into what is probably the reality of many police officers lives. There is a lot of homophobia, vile words and at times it seems like neither Mac or Tony are ever going to get a break.

I found the story, especially Ben's heartbreaking. The case is thrilling but tragic, less suspenseful mystery more horrific serial killer but I was fully captured by these characters and their little make shift family that I need to know what happens next. I can only hope their story improves!

I am hapoy at which the story is now, Mac beibg out abd the all livibg together. I am lookibg forward to further development of the story.

JF Harding did an other outstanding job in giving the story that extra layer. 5* all around
