So sad, but so good!

I can’t believe people were allowed to beat other people. It just isn't right!

But I love the overall story, just a bit gory at times.

Boy this was a good story

I love the way that you find yourself almost finding it hard to believe all these things that happened to dhal in his childhood. It’s definitely one of his best books even though it is non fiction. It is definitely one of his most scrumdiliumtious story’s from a humorous and fun perspective.

A few parts were a bit gory but it is only a problem when I listen at night.

Great narration.

Shocking, entertaining and brilliantly told

Boy is one of those books that appeals to and captures the imagination of readers of all ages and for me (as I'm sure like many others) created very different impressions through reading it both as a child and an adult. While Dahl admits his memory is sketchy in certain places, he describes many of his past events in immaculate and impressive detail, without the need to embellish to fill in the gaps. Some of the tales are light-hearted and entertaining, others quite shocking, when read with modern eyes, but a great insight into early 20th century life and the accepted (yet often unjust) norms of the education system and the practices of daily life which would seem absurd today. Dahl holds little if nothing back on what he thought of certain people and at times, you only wish they were still alive to read his recollections and analyses of their behaviour (and if indeed they would care). It is clear where Dahl got his inspiration for the 'oppressive adult' characters that appear in some of his works of fiction, with Captain Lancaster in Danny Champion of the World and Galloping Foxley in Tales of the Unexpected bearing remarkable resemblances to characters we meet in this book. Dan Stevens is a brilliant narrator, at times you almost feel he lived the experiences with Dahl himself.

Boy and it's sequel Going Solo are books which never lose their wonder and there is always something new to discover or a different slant to take with each successive read.

Interesting facts

I'm 12, I got this audio book for a thirty day free trial and finished it within three days. I've learnt a lot about Roald Dahls life and its sad to hear about beatings and everything bad about schools in those days.I also respect his mother, who by what she has done in this audio book is a very good person who I would love to have as a mother (although mine is still alright, lol jk :)
