About this listen
The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. Read by the actress Emily Shaffer.
Sydney belongs to a secret group who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the world of humans and vampires.
But when Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, she fears she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with vampire Rose Hathaway.
What unfolds is far worse. The sister of Moroi queen Lissa Dragomir is in mortal danger, and goes into hiding. Now, Sydney must act as her protector. The last thing Sydney wants is to be accused of sympathizing with vampires. And now she has to live with one...

I am, however, very disappointed that I am unable to download Book 2 in the series! All the rest of the titles, up to Book 6, seem to be available but, Book 2 is only available in German. So, be warned, you will be missing a chunk out of the stories if you start reading this series!
Brilliant start to a series

Any additional comments?
I'm a bit of a sucker (pardon the pun) for vampire fiction. I think that Richelle Mead has a great imagination and her ideas are original and well constructed.I listened first to the Vampire Academy series, which I persevered with but found a little grating - the heroes being a little too stalwart and the villains a little too mean. The problem still exists in the spin off (which centres around Sydney from the original series), but the more complex character backgrounds and exploration make it more believable.
Again the writer's imagination in the plot development and depth of the supernatural world are the strong points of the series. The quality of the actual writing is what keeps it from being as good as the likes of JK Rowling. It is arguable of course that I am just too old to be reading teen fiction... however, I found that there were far too many cliches and a lot of slightly irritating repeated phrases. This is perhaps made more obvious by the narration, as the reader (naturally) always reads the repeated parts in the same tone and with the same rhythm. That isn't a dig at Emily Shafter, who I think does very well (although I will always prefer an English accent) with the material she's given. I also liked the alternative voices, given to Adrian and some other characters, which added to the quality of the listening.
Good spin off - better than the original series.
