Outstanding

Dear Hunter
Thank you for such a powerful memoir. Not only a fascinating insight into the exhausting life of an addict but also a testimony to the power of love. As a fellow Catholic, I was deeply moved by your reciting of the ‘Hail Mary’ at your lowest times and knowing what a powerful prayer it is, am sure Our Lady protected you and along with your brother led you into the light! Wow a powerfully frank, illuminating life story

Having read both Jill and Jo Boden’s books I wanted to hear from Hunter how his life had been. A powerful and frank description of life, love, grief and addiction unfolded. Read by Hunter, you get to hear in his voice the pain and realisation of the effects his addictions had had on him and his loved ones. That grief and love run in tandem and are not exclusive. Learnt more about the effects of alcohol and drugs listening to this than any previous books but whilst they feature in the book we learn more about total family love that exudes throughout the Biden family. Thank you for telling us what really happened best wishes to you and your family.

A triumph of good over evil.

Having read Hunter's father's autobiography which was a beautifully expressed love letter to his family in the midst of horrendous personal loss, it was wonderful to witness the same abiding love reflected back in the words of the son. Hunter Biden's autobiography is seeringly and scathingly honest in dealing with his drug and alcohol addictions. In fact, it's quite brutal in its honesty. In that sense, as well as in the expressions throughout of the genuinely touching love for his family, there could not be a better understanding of the polar opposite of the goodness and decency of the Biden family compared to the dysfunctional evil of the whole Trump cabal that passes for a "family". This book is a story of redemption, written with lovely prose and read eloquently by Hunter. His epilogue to his beloved late brother Beau fulfills two major functions - displaying both his personal redemption in remembrance of his brother and the (hopeful) redemption of his country in the defeat of a sociopathic mob family whose addictions are lying, money and power.

Sordid confessions of a president's son

During the 2020 US election campaign, President Trump rallied his supporters to cruelly chant "Where's Hunter" in a similar fashion to his "lock her up" mantra aimed at Hilary Clinton four years before. "Where's Hunter" seems innocuous enough until you hear the tragic back story to Joe Biden's son, bravely recounted here in a melancholy tone by Hunter Biden himself.

Damaged by the death of his mother at an early age and his close relationship with his brother Beau, "Beautiful Things" were what Hunter promised his brother while he was undertaking treatment as an incentive to get better before he dies of a brain tumour. Hunter was brought up with his father in the public spotlight and lived around the Senate from the age of three. His ambitious father dreamt of being president of the US pulling out of the 1987 race as a result of being accused of plagiarizing one of Neil Kinnock's speeches. Having a successful career of his own as a lawyer, Hunter struggled to live up the expectations on him.

With hindsight, he accepts that it was inadvisable to take a seat on the board of a Ukrainian energy company that resulted in his father's political opponents questioning his judgement. Pressures resulted in Hunter Biden seeking solace first in alcohol and later in drugs, spiraling into a cycle of self loathing and depravity caused the breakdown of his marriage and the relationship with his daughters. Hunter Biden approaches this time in his life honestly and bravely and some of the details of his darkest years as a "hard" crack user make for unforgettable listening. He claims that an addict never chooses addiction, addiction chooses the addict. This is a shockingly sad story. Biden family motto is, apparently, that if you need to ask for help, it's too late. Maybe he really was let down by those around him but it is heartwarming that he seems to have found positively in his life again now.

Great stories and lessons of life

Brutally honest and intelligent, read it at one go. Unputdownable. Next I'm gonna brush up my German and Spanish and buy Hunter story in those. Happy to own a copy.
