About this listen

A new Demon Cycle novella from internationally bestselling author Peter V. Brett

Each night, the world is overrun by bloodthirsty demons. For centuries, humanity survived only by hiding behind defensive wards – magical symbols of power. Now, though, the rediscovery of other, long-forgotten wards has given them the magic they need to fight back…

In Tibbet’s Brook, the fighting wards have brought change, heightening tensions and grudges of a troubled past. Selia Square, the woman they call Barren, has long been the force holding the Brook together. As a terrifying new threat emerges, she must rally the people of the Brook once more.

But Selia has a past of her own. And in a small community the personal and the political can never be divided. If Tibbet’s Brook is to survive, Selia must uncover memories she has buried deep – of the woman she once was and the woman she once loved – to retell their story.

Fantastic

Beautifully written and emotionally taut. Listen enjoy and let make you think a bit, fantasy story that draws from real world issues.

Novella in the excellent series

Background story to the main tale of The Painted Man and its sequels. All highly recommended - original and gripping.

Still hungry for more...

Cecilia Barren, one of my favourite characters in a novella of her own. Exciting and engaging. Still hoping for more from this beautifully crafted universe!

This is book 5.5 not 1.75 but still amazing.

Colin's narration is flawless, believable accents (at least the Thesan ones) and a great understanding of tone.

Story was epic as ever with 3D characters and a brilliant pace. It was fantastic to see more of Tibbet's Brook.

I have a bone to pick with Audible they put it as book 1.75 making me think it took place between The Great Bazaar and The Desert Spear (book 2). It actually takes place after The Core (book 5) but luckily with not too many spoilers.

Loved the painted man Saga, this... not so much

While I absolutely loved The painted Man series I could not help but find this book incredibly boring. My problem is with the fictional lesbian Love story I guess he may be trying to push a certain agenda but in such a cool world this story seems really forced, we don't even get insight into what brought those two together, it was incredibly shallow. We could've followed the main characters kids, this could have been so much more

More drivel

Peter ruined this fantasy series with his fixation on tawdry sexual characterisation while padding out books with pheripheral characters, this book is more of the same.
