Summary
It feels as if the entire area is blown up. A long rumbling explosion shakes the German position. Then an infernal scream sounds. Through flashes of fire, they see Tiny's huge silhouette with the light grey bowler on his head. He is standing by the end of the enemy trench with his machine gun resting on his hip. The tracer streak projectiles shoot out of the muzzle. Bewildered shapes flee in panic. - What a bunch of devils, the Russian lieutenant exclaims in admiration.
Sven Hassel was sent to a penal battalion as a private in the German forces. Intensely and with brutal realism, he portrays the cruelty of the war, the Nazi crimes and the crude and cynical humor of the soldiers. With more than 50 million sold copies, this is one of the world's best selling war novels.

Raw Emotion & Gallows Humour
The treatment of prisoners in the Garrison Military Prison, during early 1940s Germany; very horrific, also with more than a touch of reality. Another outstanding feature is, as in all of Sven Hassle’s Novels, depicting the harshness of battles and conditions of the Eastern Front. As ever, included is extraordinary humour of Soldiers facing instant death. I have been reading and re-reading Sven Hassle’s wonderful books for over 40 years. There has been a lot of speculation about the Author; lots of hearsay about whether or not these stories are true, or did he serve in the SS? The thing is, to me, It doesn’t matter because the facts are in the numbers of books that have sold since the first publication of Legion of The Dammed. To be honest I don’t care. I love these books, because they are about Soldiers. Being a Veteran myself, I understand the importance of reading them. Nothing to do with National Socialist Germany is glorified in these novels, quite the opposite in fact. These and those of Leo Kessler ( Charles Whiting) have gotten me through some very difficult times. To offset the terrible realities of War, humorous situations are well written and hilariously portrayed throughout as I have already mentioned. Highly Recommended.

Shame about the narrator
Ok so you know what you’re going to get with Hassel’s books: excesses of brutality, alcohol and whoring set amidst the meandering tale of the futility of war. While the books have stood the test of time, sadly the narration is monotone and soulless.

A good interlude
A nice balance from the usual Sven Hassel books.
Nicely read and as enjoyable as any book by the same author.

the Jim Thompson of war stories
I don't give "a tinker's cuss" if the translation is a bit old fashioned it somehow fits in perfectly with this novel by one of the most underrated writers of ALL TIME. The narration too is PERFECT in every way. His voice captures the slyness of Porta for example perfectly and is never over done. A dark dark novel but funny too in places.

Not his best tale it is well put together and all that but no not his best seemed to start like a series of anicdots a mediocre centre with an end you could see coming a mile away but all the same worthwhile. I paid around £7.00 for this kind have felt like asking for £5.00 back. Maybe its just me and you may love it
