Summary

‘Crackles with energy and wit’ – The Times

London Society takes their problems to Sherlock Holmes. Everyone else goes to Arrowood.

1895: London’s scared. A killer haunts the city’s streets. The poor are hungry; crime bosses are taking control; the police force stretched to breaking point.

While the rich turn to Sherlock Holmes, the celebrated private detective rarely visits the densely populated streets of South London, where the crimes are sleazier and the people are poorer.

In a dark corner of Southwark, victims turn to a man who despises Holmes, his wealthy clientele and his showy forensic approach to crime: Arrowood – self-taught psychologist, occasional drunkard and private investigator.

When a man mysteriously disappears and Arrowood’s best lead is viciously stabbed before his eyes, he and his sidekick Barnett face their toughest quest yet: to capture the head of the most notorious gang in London…

In the bestselling tradition of Anthony Horowitz and Andrew Taylor, this gloriously dark crime debut will haunt readers long after the last second.

Really Enjoyable and believable

Came across this book and thought I would give it a try and wow! What a find!!

The characters were intriguing and so believable, enhanced by the superb narration of Malk Williams.

The plot was great and kept you guessing all the way through and Mick Finlay should be congratulated on such a well written book.

I’m off immediately to download the next book in the series. Well with a credit and I can whole heartedly recommend!!!

Very Good

There is nothing bad to say about this enjoyable yarn. Cannot fault the narrator, nor the story. Characters were very realistic and the story was well performed. Just the right length too.

Highly recommended

A new star in the detective firmament. Arrowood and Barnet are a double act more reminiscent of Shardlake and Barak than Holmes and Watson, whom Arrowood hates so much. This is the seedy side of London in the 1890s. Holmes visits this world but Arrowood lives in it. Flawed characters making the best of the situations they find themselves in - this is a cracking tale, well read by Malk Williams. The best recommendation is that I look forward eagerly to the next instalment.

Good and gripping Victorian detective mystery

I loved this book, really good characters and a good solid detective mystery with plenty of twists and turns, loved the one sided rivalry between Arrowwood and Sherlock Holmes

Poor man's Sherlock

Arrowood clever cunning as was I think a line in the hustler a student of human moves and not as brave as he thinks he is hence need for trusty assistant Barnett.
A great ensemble cast and sense of time and place a great listen the narration is amazing

Great debut of a new detective

Excellent story, with interesting characters. Good plot. Really nice to find a detective who is both flawed and humane. Told through the eyes of his assistant develops the characters through the relationship. The resentment that Arrowood feels for the celebrated Sherlock Holmes is a great sub-plot. The ending is very satisfying, without the overblown and unbelievable endings of so many detective stories. I would recommend this to anyone who is bored with the usual, jaded detective stereotype or of unrealistic heroics. I was gripped from beginning to end and look forward to Arrowood's next case. Oh, and the narration is excellent.

Almost .. but not quite

As a fan of Victorian, London fiction of all kind I was looking forward listening to another entertaining crime story with good reviews.
Once I had got used to the narration style I thought I would enjoy the tale of a “not” Sherlock Holmes tale.
However this one is not quite there.
It is a a great plot, but unravels at a linear and plodding pace with little to like about any of the characters involved. I appreciate the attempt at a more vicious and gritty Holmes and Watson to reflect the harsh time period, but without any lighter themes or humour the result feels staid and unsatisfying.
But .. the author has introduced us to an interesting cast who may find themselves in a truly great novel in the future.
