Summary

From the bestselling author of A Killer’s Wife, Victor Methos’s acclaimed Desert Plains series continues with the saga of two brilliant defense attorneys and a client whose confession may not be what it seems.

Two couples cut to bits near a canyon close to the Nevada border. The police pull over blood-soaked Arlo Ward not far from the site of the grisly murders; he fully cooperates with the officers, grinning through a remorseless confession dripping with gory detail. Investigators find no murder weapon, but young, awkward Arlo’s confession is signed, taped, and delivered.

Defense attorney Dylan Aster and his partner, Lily Ricci, are two rising legal stars. They’re hesitant about pursuing the Arlo Ward case, as it seems like a slam dunk for the prosecution - Arlo was covered in the victims’ DNA and admitted to everything. But the state psychiatrist shares the impossible with Dylan: Arlo Ward is likely innocent. The man is racked with delusional schizophrenia, seizing on these murders as an opportunity for macabre attention.

Dylan can’t resist. He and Lily take on Arlo as their client, but once the trial commences, it’s clear that the real secrets and lies are just beginning.

*Thrilling to the End*

At the start of this case there two couple camping in a remote area when tragedy strikes. 3 of them are gruesomely hacked to piece’s and posed whilst one Holly Fallows is running for her life. Whilst running Holly comes to a ledge and the choice is to jump or be killed so she jumps. She receives horrific injuries and barely survives and goes to court.

Later on a speeding driver is stopped and covered in blood. He immediately confesses to the heinous crimes but he suffers from schizophrenia.

Defence attorneys Dylan Aster and his partner Lily Ricci decide to take the case. Dylan has received a job offer which would mean uprooting his sick mother and sister with learning difficulties but the money would mean he could properly take care of them but the work would not satisfy him. Will this be his last case???

The prosecution think they have a slam dunk of a case but Dylan thinks differently and is fighting to save their client Arlo from the death penalty.

There are twists and turns right to the end as Dylan and Lily dig deeper and recover a vital piece of evidence that the other side withheld.

I found myself thinking that Arlo is either very stupid or extremely clever. We soon find out that all is not what it seems and will true justice be served…..

A real page turner and somehow Victor Methos makes a courtroom drama into a riveting case.

Fantastic book. Narrator was brilliant

I wasn’t sure at first as it was a new narrator in the trilogy. But I’m glad I did. Another fantastic book and Iv found my new favourite narrator!

Really enjoyed this book so many twists I was hooked from page 1 and was sad when it ended, I got lost in the characters and the narration only added to the storyline brilliant

Cinemagraphic Excellence!!

Methos is a triple threat writer: plot, character & imagery are all exquisitely crafted in every one of these books. I honestly feel like I've just watched a brilliant film! Coen bros meets David Mamet meets Soderbergh.

At first I was disappointed because of the change of narrator from the previous novels in the series but as this focuses on a male central character it made sense.

Gripping

Great story line but the end was wrapped up too easily and should have been a lot better

fantastic

Initially I thought a change in narrator for the series would be a let down but I was wrong! Fantastic Narration, a gripping story and a great ending. I loved this book.

I'm so glad I took the recommendation to read this authors work. Great characters and I didn't guess the plot ending. I'll definitely read more of his books.
