Summary

Collected radio plays and short stories by Rachel Joyce

Rachel Joyce captured the hearts of millions with her best-selling debut novel, which told the moving tale of an ordinary man, Harold Fry, who embarks on an epic journey to deliver a message and save a life. But Harold’s story began its life on radio, in the award-winning play which opens this collection: To Be a Pilgrim, starring Anton Lesser, Anna Massey and Niamh Cusack.

Here, too, is an adaptation of the companion novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, with Sophie Thompson as Queenie, as well as a collection of linked Christmas tales, A Snow Garden and Other Stories, read by the author herself.

Also featured here are 11 more superb radio productions, each showcasing Joyce’s characteristic empathy, compassion and understanding of the human heart. Including a dark modern fairy tale set in Baghdad, a Brief Encounter-style romance and the heartbreaking story of the Lindbergh baby, they are: Painting Mrs Jones, Feather, Kissing Shadows, Talking, Take One Night, The Porter and the Three Ladies, The Art of Balance, Little Lower Than the Angels, The Wall and The Memory Thief.

Life-affirming, touching and redemptive, these magical dramas explore themes of friendship, connection, the role of memory in our lives and the true nature of happiness. Among the star casts are Lindsay Duncan, Sophie Thompson, Shaun Dooley, Kenneth Cranham, Stephen Tompkinson and Lia Williams.

This special edition also features Rachel Joyce in conversation with Niamh Cusack.

As good as others. I feel spoilt.+ snow garden .

This is spot on. I loved Harold and queenie books.. I found the one about Harold a joy. The one about queenie heart breaking as just lost my mum in 6 wks to cancer. I nursed her..rip... But as a writer this lady blows me a way... Wow what compassion. Humanity. She writes empathising. Observations. She must be such a selfless human. She wrote exactly how you would act in everyday life.. Be proud of yourself.. This is one hell of an important and impressive peace of work... It would be a good training tool for people whom want to work in the sticky jobs.. I tell you.. At one point its my thought process whilst folks were Terminal to a tea... Thank u so much Rachel.. Plse carry on sharing your precious works.... Be careful out there xx

Not for the depressed !

If you suffer from clinical depression.
Do not listen to this.

It drags you down so low - perhaps the author is suffering too.

An Eclectic Collection

This collection of Rachel Joyce’s radio dramas not only features two of her best loved creations, Harold Fry and Queenie Hennessy, but introduces us to more troubled souls. There are the women in the field determined to wait, the couple living out their dangerous fantasies, a married couple who finally let it all out building a birthday present and sisters at odds over divorces and deaths of parents. The collection also includes a series of short Christmas stories where it is truly reflected how Christmas is different for everyone. Highly recommend.
