About this listen

Book one in a fantasy series of super rich magical dynasties and warring heirs - from the author of the million-copy-selling Alex Verus series. For readers of contemporary fantasy who enjoy the methods and magicians of dark academia...

ANYONE CAN USE MAGIC - IF THEY CAN AFFORD THE PRICE...

In a world where everything magical is bought up and controlled by the super rich - Stephen Oakwood has inherited a natural talent for magic. Plunged by his father's disappearance into a glittering world of scheming dynasties, warring patriarchs and vicious scions, Stephen must navigate magical high society and learn to control his gifts.

Dangerous enemies await the Oakwood heir, and even more dangerous allies: if Stephen cannot master his magic quickly and learn to distinguish friend from foe, his name may end up on the missing persons list, just like his father.

Loved it!

I enjoyed the whole Alex Verus series but as good as the narrator was he was never right for the character, and I found it hard to get past. Not a problem with this new series; the narrator is brilliant and perfect for our new hero.
There’s a lot to learn about this new magic, all of it fascinating, and the various characters promise an interesting future. I’m just sad that it’s so new I can’t binge it all right away.

Fantastic story and well read

Wonderful new world with new rules like nothing I have read before. The person reading has a very soothing voice too. I would definitely recommend if you like magical fantasy. I love that it is set in london and has a lovely feel to it.

Couldn’t stop listening

Great story without the traditional happy ending. Spoiled only by the narrator’s inability to pronounce the word ‘sigil’, which features large in the story.

Mostly good

There was too much filler between the action for me, but I enjoyed it when it got moving - not sure I will go for the rest of the series…..but I might!

Laying the foundation

I liked Alex Verus and I know i am going to love this. The narrator was excellent. Only4* as it is laying the foundation and limited in. The action but I reckon it’ll continue to develop … so I’m in 👍

Siggle?

Siggle/ sigil? Oh well it’s done now. I wonder if the audiobook’s producers will double down on the continuous mispronunciation of a word that is used so much to name a fundamental feature of this story. Apart from this strange quirk here is an interesting new description of magic.

I look forward to seeing how this story progresses.

Excellent story telling

I enjoyed Alex Verus but this seems even better. More in the London corporate/rich family stance with magic touches rather than the political sub world of Alex Verus. It pulls you in right from the start and whirls through to a very good ending which you want the result of now. I hope book 2 comes soon.
