About this listen

From the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series and the inspiration behind HBO's True Blood comes an electrifying new thriller centered on a young gunslinging mercenary, Lizbeth Rose.

Set in a fractured United States, in the southwestern country now known as Texoma, this is a world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted. Battered by a run across the border to Mexico, gunslinger Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards.

She may be young, but Gunnie Rose has acquired a fearsome reputation and the wizards are at a desperate crossroads, even if they won't admit it. They're searching frantically to locate the only man whose blood they believe can save their tsar's life.

As the trio journey through an altered America, they're set upon by enemies. It's clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie who has never failed a client, but her oath will test all of her skills and resolve to get them all out alive.

The Dark Tower meets True Blood in this gritty and wildly entertaining tale of Gunnie Rose. A woman fighting unimaginable odds to keep her people alive after the disintegration of America, this is a surefire hit for fans of The Walking Dead or Westworld.

A good story read by a poor narrator

I enjoyed the story. Easy to follow and still exciting. just what you expect from Charlaine Harris. Unfortunately the narrator has the flattest most unenthusiastic voice while reading this book. I hope this is not how she reads everything, but how she was directed to read this by the publishers or whatnot.

ANOTHER EXCELLENT STORY

I still prefer Midnight Crossroad probably because of the excellent Sookie Stackhouse series and I feel that I would have enjoyed this more if Johanna Parker was narrating. Nevertheless it was still up to Charlaine Harris’ very high standard story telling. I enjoyed it very much :-)

Interesting but...

I think this would be a great new series but it was ruined by the flattest narration I`ve ever heard. I will happily buy the rest of the series... provided it is read by someone else. Who has a grasp of timing, pace, emotion and interpretation. It was a little like listening to a robot. The story was, in spite of this, good, the characters well set up. Such a shame.

Excellent Book

I really liked the book and look forward to listening to the next instalment. I wasn’t so keen on the narration. It’s very dead pan throughout and I found myself being taken out of the story at times. I would recommend the book although.

Good Stories but not so great narration

I think this series has promise, but the narration is very difficult to endure. We are very spoiled with such amazing voice actors that I have become very picky.
On a brighter note the book itself which I have read is a great start to what I hope will be another fantastic series by Ms Harris.
