About this listen

A spell-binding mystery, packed with suspense....

During the investigation into the death of a woman on a Liverpool housing estate, DI Tara Grogan encounters Callum, a local recluse who claims to have information.

But he won't help her unless she, in turn, helps him find out the truth about the suspicious death of his wife and child.

Tara is ready to dismiss his outlandish theories and ravings, until she discovers that, like her, he was a student at Latimer College, Oxford. A place which she has very much buried in the past.

Desperate to move forward in her case and curiosity piqued, Tara accepts, but as she delves deeper into the man's past, it becomes obvious he hasn't been honest with her.

And when another death is linked to Callum, Tara is confronted by the danger that her own demons have led her to trust the wrong person again.

I enjoyed the story however the police procedure part was very scetchy. Depending on the cost I may listen to rest in series.

Good story

I persevered with this book but the narration was really awful. The dreadful narrator overtook the storyline and it really didn't improve. Which is a shame as the story had the bones of a really good listen with a better narrator. I will not listen to a single book with this narrator again

Terrible narration spoilt story

The story, set in Liverpool, is devoid of any local accent. The narrator has such a clipped and plummy accent that it spoilt the experience for me.
An excellent story.

The Narration was awful.

Enjoyed the story but found the narrator had a strange way of speaking, which I had to get over to be able to listen to the story.

Enjoyable story

Loved how the story developed slowly and we got to know the characters

Also enjoyed the random ‘NI sayings’ which popped out now and again

Narration could have been a bit more ‘energetic’

Great story

Many times, I felt like giving up on this rather unbelievable story and the flat narration but the story had enough interest to keep me going! Glad this audiobook was a freeby

Fairly interesting story but poor narration

Started not too bad, but got rapidly worse, the ending was absurd, made even more painful by the grating narration.

Awful narration

I continued to listen although the narrator would be better employed reading Jane Austen or books where no accents are needed. A Liverpudlian "lout" or "Scally " as they say there would never have a a southern accent. I expect more from audible. I would like to listen to the next in the series as R McCracken writes a good story but don't think I can listen to the clipped tones again and as there is a lot of choice out there... If the author has any say in the matter I am sure he will gain more listens from a different reader

A good listen totally let down by the reader

An easy listen with plenty of twists and turns. I found the characterisation of Tara as a strong, brave, fiercely intelligent and determined detective who would fall for a suspect slightly hard to believe, but an enjoyable listen nonetheless!

Intriguing read full of twists and turns

Having listened to the book, I want back to the beginning and listened to the first chapter again. I think I am correct, the narrator improved with practice.

A slightly different plot and characters than normal, but it all got sa little silly in the last couple of chapters. I generally enjoyed it though.

An interesting if slightly chaotic listen/read
