You’d probably pass judgment, assuming you know her - but you don’t know the half of it. As Effie’s life spirals through a mess of excess, drama, and addiction plaguing her at every turn, she has nothing to look forward to but a hangover worse than death itself each morning. This play is a powerful account of the case filed by the American Federation for Equal Rights (AFER) in the U.S. District Court in 2010 to overturn Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that eliminated the rights of same-sex couples to marry in the state of California. Framed around the trial's historic closing arguments in June 2010, 8 provides an intimate look at what unfolded when the issue of same-sex marriage was on trial.

An enthralling story
- By Sally on 08-01-12
Summary
All the Ways to Say I Love You by Neil LaBute, directed by Leigh Silverman, is a thoughtful, psychological solo play centered around the character Faye Johnson, performed by multi-award-winning actress Judith Light (Transparent, American Crime Story, Who's the Boss?). Reflecting on an event from her past, Johnson confronts the defining question of her life: What is the weight of a lie?
All the Ways to Say I Love You received its World Premiere production at the MCC Theater in September of 2016. MCC is under the leadership of Artistic Directors Robert Lupone, Bernard Telsey, William Cantler, and Executive Director Blake West.
Bonus content includes an Audible-exclusive conversation between director Leigh Silverman and actress Judith Light.
Critic reviews
"[All the Ways to Say I Love You] is a throwback to a favorite form of Mr. LaBute's earlier days: the one-act monologue in which an ostensibly sunny soul strips down to dark shadows." (The New York Times)
"Leave it to Neil LaBute to find a heretofore unknown...way to express one's love...As anyone who knows LaBute's work can expect, a creeping primal darkness ensnares us in what appears to be an ordinary life." (Newsday)
"[Judith Light] vividly renders her character's complex feeling of shame, regret, and also unabashed joy...The anguish that Mrs. Johnson feels is palpable, and it's impossible not to sympathize with her." (Hollywood Reporter)
"The emotionally ravaged, unexpectedly sensuous Mrs. Johnson is a departure from the rueful, acerbic quipsters she has perfect onstage, and Ms. Light brings a vibrant, thirsty eroticism to the part." (The New York Times)

Way too short--less than an hour
What disappointed you about All the Ways to Say I Love You?
Good story, perfectly performed by Judith Light.
It is not the length of time it says it is. The story is less than 50 minutes and then it is a question and answer with Judith Light. She is amazing but not what I was looking to spend my money or credits on.

5 stars all around! Judith Light is incredible!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would definitely recommend this audiobook to a friend. This book, or play rather, touches on so many relatable topics ( love, lust, sex, lies, the state of our country, marriage, etc.), and I think that there is definitely at least one, if not more, take-aways from this play that someone listening could relate to.
What other book might you compare All the Ways to Say I Love You to and why?
I don't have anything off the top of my head that I could relate this solo performance and story to. It is a great book about guilt and trying to overcome guilt with talking yourself into believing things are okay.
What does Judith Light bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A brilliant and emotional performance. Having Judith Light perform as Mrs. Johnson really brings the character to life. You can relate to her, you understand her, you want to hear her story. Judith's performance is incredible and captivating!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I did. I listened to it quickly within an hour and a half to two hours. I wanted to hear her story so much that I could not shut it off. Initially, when the story started, I wasn't expecting it to take the turn that it did. But once she spoke about how her relationship developed with Tommy, I couldn't push pause!
Any additional comments?
I would highly recommend listening to this audiobook! It is powerful, it is relatable, it deals with real life issues, and there is something for everyone in this story. If you don't listen to it for the story-line (which you should because it is great), listen to it to hear Judith Light's amazing performance. She will have you captivated!

It's a shame that the play is too short
I was so taken by the play that when it was over I was like "Wait! I want more!" Judith Light's performance was impecable, heartfelt, powerful... I loved every minute of it. The story is so simple and easy, and yet SO strong and filled with very interesting messages. Neil LaBute is an extraordinary writer, and I can't wait to hear more from his work.

Great to revisit a great performance
I saw the play two years ago at MCC. Judith Light was magnificent in the one-woman play and my attention never wavered from start to finish. It's great that many people can share that experience to a certain degree through this audiobook. Yes, it's short. It was a little under 1 hour when I saw it and is the same here, but the storytelling is just so mesmerizing that it barely matters. It doesn't drag and you get what you need to understand what the character is going through on a quite personally level.

Great Title Promises much more than it delivers!
I wasted a credit on a story that was not very original and certainly did not live up to the spectacular possibilities of its title! And do not get me started on the one hour interview of chapter two—which was a gushing, pointless review of Light’s career starting with Who’s The Boss as.an unsung feminist masterpiece! Judith Light is a great actress but this work was so predictable and truly just skated the surface of a subject that would yes make her a pariah! But that was not explored, just a rather predictable shallow presentation of one of the most societally shunned things a person can do! Honestly Is this the best Audible can do with its new theatre series?
