Summary

The inspiration for the BBC series of the same name.

Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semiferal cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James find he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him. And when he meets Helen, the beautiful daughter of a local farmer, all the training and experience in the world can't help him....

Since they were first published, James Herriot's memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Creatures Great and Small is a heartwarming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain's best-loved authors.

Critic reviews

"I grew up reading James Herriot's books and I'm delighted that 30 years on, they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then." (Kate Humble)

Classic, perfect narrator - terrible editing

I have read the books and watched the films and TV series over and over, so was delighted to see Christopher Timothy as the narrator chosen for the Audible book.

The stories were wonderful as ever, the narrator perfect, bringing them to life in the voice of 'James' from the TV series - the editing was not.

Oddly timed interjections of music jarred rather than helped the mood, and the recording frequently stalled, jerked, stuttered, and therefore missed out chunks of the narrative. I felt this was not just annoying, but surely insulting to Mr Timothy who had worked so hard to give a super performance, each character brought beautifully to life.

I was so disappointed with this one - bad editing ruined what could have been a five-star audiobook.

Great story and narrator - terrible sound quality

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I love this book - it's evocative of life in the Dales and of times long lost. Herriot delivers a rich sensory painting with beautiful descriptions. If you're squeamish, it might not be something to listen to over a cheese and pickle sandwich at lunchtime.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Christopher Timothy's narration is superb, and the audiobook is segmented by short bursts of instrumental music to punctuate the story. However, I tried both streaming and playing from my mobile download and there were gaps in sentences, when the narration cut out, and there were frequent jarring moments where the recording 'stuck' like a record on a turntable before continuing. Given the quality of the story, and the performance, this was highly disappointing.

Wonderful story but poor recording!!

This is a gorgeous story full of life and love and read brilliantly! The experience was let down by the dodgy recording. So frustrating!! It jarred and repeated a few times and is really bad at the end. Please sort it out Audible. This is a classic, beloved by many and deserves some TLC.

All Creatures Great and Small

A much loved series. I read the books and watched the tv series many many years ago. The audio book is also enchanting to listen too. Unfortunately there are quite a few breaks and scratches in the recording. Can this be repaired?

Brilliant!

I love all of James Herriot's books and to hear them read by Christopher Timothy is just perfect. Was genuinely sad when I got to the end of this, you just want it to go on endlessly.

Enchanting

Humorous, warm and sometimes bitter-sweet. This book is a wonderful reminder of the value of simple things, community and kindness. Eccentric characters (human and animal) are encountered by the tolerant young vet in his first few years of practice. I read this book with my mother when I was perhaps ten years old and it has been lovely to listen again.
