Summary

A groundbreaking Latinx Aliens novel by a rising star Latina author, featuring the fan-favorite character PFC Jenette Vasquez from the hit movie Aliens and the family she is forced to leave behind

Even before the doomed mission to Hadley’s Hope on LV-426, Jenette Vasquez had to fight to survive. Born to an immigrant family with a long military tradition, she looked up to the stars, but life pulled her back down to Earth—first into a street gang, then prison. The Colonial Marines proved to be Vasquez’s way out—a way that forced her to give up her twin children. Raised by Jenette’s sister, those children, Leticia and Ramon, had to discover their own ways to survive. Leticia by following her mother’s path into the military, Ramon into the corporate hierarchy of Weyland-Yutani. Their paths would converge on an unnamed planet which some see as a potential utopia, while others would use it for highly secretive research. Regardless of whatever humans might have planned for it, however, Xenomorphs will turn it into a living hell.

Not enough Xenomorphs

It pains me to write a negative review as a massive Alien fan but there was little on Alien & more about a family story of Vasquez twins. Would be better but most action on alien was within the last hour. They had queens the lot & feel that the lack of there presence or drones. Love Vasquez but I won’t be listening to this book again. All the others I’ve listened each Alien so many times however this left me disappointed & that’s a first in the Alien franchise. Also the narrator made some people sound like an AI.

enjoyed this but was expecting more action

enjoyed the book some good characters but the action came late and falls somewhat flat after the build up and is over very quickly hopefully we see this character again and she gets more time to shine

if you want aliens. don't waste your time

9 hours of character building which largely has nothing to do with the the last 2 hours. less than an hour of actual action

Family saga.

Not so much an ‘Alien’ story as a family saga. Long, LONG time to get going. Gave up half way through, and went back to it later.

Colonial marines' backstage

Very explicit show of internal politics and background of Colonial Marines.
Also insights of inner workings of Weyland Yutani Corp.
Hard truths about human heart.
The audio voice could be a little more dramatic when the narrative required faster pace.
Overall a good story.

I've given up. the alien universe v teenage angst

it's such a bore feat. it's great to get an alternative view of the universe and the back story is cool but omg it goes on and on and my life is to short. it's meant to be a life time of bad road not a live time of teen angst. it may pan out towards the end.like the other books but beam me up I have had enough returned

Could be good for some

More coming of age/equal rights and current culture description than Aliens. Some might like it just fine perhaps.
It is somehow taking the "given" strong woman (Ripley or Vasquez from movies) and explaining things that don't need explaining. Well, unless you still live in the 60s which many cultures still seem to do.

Not great

Took about 7 hours to get going, and the narrator had quite a mono-tone performance

Tedious and Robotic

“Certain to bring ……………..certain death” Not reading ahead means you wait until your eyes move to the next line. This means there is a flat robot reading. It’s almost like she is too tired working on this task and just in it for the money. Absolutely no attempt at voice acting so you don’t know who is speaking until you get “she said” and then you have to remember who is speaking to whom to work out who is speaking. Arrrgh!
Also
Guesses how to pronounce unfamiliar words like heifer for jefe and a couch necklace ….. don’t you mean a conch shell you found on the beach.
A Speak Recognition system would have sounded less robotic.

I am so disappointed as Vasquez was one of my favourite characters.

Failure to live up to expectation

Poor continuity really killed this audio book - time passes without comment from the narrator. The listener is left to wonder how many years have passed in between key events as no indication is given. The female narrator, a Spanish speaker, struggles to produce a convincing British accent for a male character. Vasquez was such a fiery, independent and self assured character in Aliens (an excellent bad ass, that you were rooting for!) - it's a great shame that this story has been cobbled together. The writing feels rushed and clunky - like not enough time was spent editing the text before it went into production.
