Summary
Seventeen is a hitman, the best in the world, so-called because there were 16 before him, stretching back through the decades. Definitely worth a read
This reminds me a bit of Orphan X books and though not up to that standard is well worth a read.

Wait for the film to be disappointed
I came to this book based on its recognition by the Crime Writers Association with its Ian Fleming award this year. The plot is a familiar riff on the story of the rogue assassin. An abused childhood, leads to vengeance and then an apprenticeship and career in assassination directed by an unscrupulous handler doing wet work for the governments of the world. You get a lot of detail about guns and invaisive technology that can do anything except get the baddies to shoot straight. This book was recognised by the CWA as a thriller but with no sense of jeopardy there are few thrills to be had. With an eye on a movie deal there are some well written shoot outs but the lead characters may as well wear capes and pants outside their jeans. With sequels ready to go severed femoral arteries have all the consequence of a fleshwound. I don't blame Mr Brownlow for knocking this novel out but I can only conclude that the families of the CWA panel were being held hostage in the cellar to arrive at their decision to recognise this book. . Don't listen to this book. Wait for the inevitable crash,bang, wallop film populated by vacuous characters, to come.
