Editor reviews

Age of Iron is book 1 in the hugely popular audiobook series Iron Age Trilogy by highly-acclaimed fantasy writer Angus Watson and narrated by English actor Sean Barrett. This spectacular series is a feast of iron-fuelled battles, evil, bloodshed and lust. Dug Sealskinner the travelling mercenary has joined forces with a child and a dangerously revengeful warrior to take on the entire army of King Zadar. They are unprepared and unarmed – death is imminent. The twists in this story are phenomenal and the writing is exceptional. This is a pulse-quickening saga where only dark magic holds the key to survival. Available now from Audible.

Summary

Legends aren't born. They're forged.

Dug Sealskinner is a down-on-his-luck mercenary travelling south to join up with King Zadar's army. But he keeps rescuing the wrong people. First, Spring, a child he finds scavenging on the battlefield, and then Lowa, one of Zadar's most fearsome warriors, who's vowed revenge on the king for her sister's execution.

Now Dug's on the wrong side of that thousands-strong army he hoped to join - and worse, Zadar has bloodthirsty druid magic on his side. All Dug has is his war hammer, one rescued child, and one unpredictable, highly-trained warrior with a lust for revenge that's going to get them all killed.... It's a glorious day to die.

I arrived here purely by accident!!

I thought I was about to immerse myself into a bloody tale about pre Roman Britain.
I laughed out loud so much, I'm sure most of my fellow M6 compadres thought I was mad. Brilliant series of books. A wonderfully delivered story (Sean Barrett's voice is amazing) and some well described graphic violence. Angus Watsons turn of phrase makes me laugh. in fact after listening to Angus's trilogy I gave sky TV's Brittania series a second chance. I need more stories about the characters in this book.

Age of iron rocks

As usual Sean Barretts narration was top notch, particularly in the battle scenes. Medieval hero and heroine battling it out against the cruel and sadistic king. Not only was the storyline exciting but you also get to learn a little about Iron Age life within a half fantasy context with great humour thrown in for good measure. Fab! If you liked the "left hand of God" trilogy you will enjoy this.

Loved it.

Loved this. It was fast paced, funny although bloody at times. Perhaps the political narrative felt a little heavy handed at times. Sean Barrett's performance was excellent, and perhaps good enough for me to reconsider Steven Pacey as my favourite narrator.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

Would you listen to Age of Iron again? Why?

I would listen to Iron age again, good narration and a very interesting sotryline set apart more by dialogue and moments of dry humour than the story content. Very good listen

What other book might you compare Age of Iron to, and why?

The First Law series has a similar tone throughout sections.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narration did add effect in delivery which is often missing in audio books.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh in sections. Interested me in others.

Surprisingly funny and well written

If you could sum up Age of Iron in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, exciting and a little bit 'ick'.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Sean Barrett is brilliant - usually I don't like it when men do women's voices and visa versa but I just love his Spring. I couldn't imagine Dug speaking any other way.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I'd had 15 hours free in one day then, yes.

Any additional comments?

I bought this as a book that my boyfriend would enjoy on a long car journey and hoped I would too. I absolutely loved it and I've been secretly listening to the second book without him...
