Summary
Workaholic Erin Ryder was on the fast track to self-destruction. Reeling after her lover walked out on her, she turned to booze and caffeine to make it through each day. After a family intervention, she finds herself on a remote ranch in New Mexico - on womyn’s land - to detox and heal. No cell service, no internet - she’s convinced she won’t last three days, much less for the three-month sentence her father has mandated.
Running from the chaos that had become her life, Melanie West moved to Eagle Bluff Ranch seven years ago. By far the youngest there, she embraced the compassionate, peaceful life that the elders espoused. Living off what her garden produced, her chickens and goats became her friends and confidants. Exposure to the outside world was limited to the handful of guests who stayed a few days at the ranch each year.
This summer would be different. Melanie found herself hosting a young woman for three months. A young woman who wanted to be anywhere but there. As the days and weeks passed, their animosity turned to friendship as they helped the other heal from their past failures.
Erin soon found herself loving life on Mel’s little farm. Loving life and loving Mel. Saying goodbye would be the hardest thing she had to do - saying goodbye to Mel...or saying goodbye to her previous life.

Gentle story
I really enjoyed this book - it was so different from anything else I have read. It almost made me want to pack up and move to New Mexico! The narrator's voice irritated me a little in the beginning but actually, she was perfect for the book. The only criticism is that the voices of the two main characters were very similar so it was difficult at times to tell who was speaking.

quiet retreat, gentle paced read
as usual i enjoyed Gerri Hills style of writing, the storyline could have had a bit more depth in places, but still a pleasant tale... maybe lacking a little punch in places that could've been more powerful, but still enjoyable and as usual nicely narrated by Nicole

Fantastic
Ahhh...Gerri Hill just writes the most brilliant lesbian romances goddammit! This is another one of my faves. I love the setting and the small cast of characters, including animals and vegetables and food, and the gardening and the frolicking and obviously the sensual storyline. Its all so delicious. Also, this book made me roast a massive amount of veggies and drink a red bull. Weird. Power of suggestion I guess. Oh and Nicole Zanzarella is A. Mazing. I wish she would read more lesfic...

My favourite Gerri Hill Novel
This was perfect , I really enjoyed The mainly gentleness allowing me to get to know the characters. And boy what characters Gerri Hill has created here , they are so well written and fleshed out. I even felt sorry for Rachel and her beans . There is a bit of drama and a confrontation but the majority of the book is about how the two main characters Melanie and Erin heal and find their way back to themselves .
The way Mel and Erin gradually open up and share their past is very well paced and well done .
I really feel like I know these characters, not just through the book but know them .
On a personal level it's also nice to read about a group of fellow vegetarians
Nicol Zanzarella narration is perfect, her soft tone suiting the book very well and she really brings the words to life
I highly recommend After the summer rain to anyone who likes lesbian romance and great characters

A well written romantic weepie
Gerri Hill is a skilled writer and story teller who knows how to wring every drop of emotion from a situation, in a way that does not feel forced or contrived. This gentle story is a refreshing change that runs contrary to current overarching US values, material wealth at all costs, which decree that a person's wealth and power is not only an indication of their value as a human being but their prospects for happiness too. This glorious story highlights the importance of alternative values and will go on my Audible favourites list to listen again whenever I need these affirming.
Nicole Zanzarella is an acomplished narrator, who adopts the right accent, timbre and tone to successfully convey all aspects of this story, from start to finish.

Not for me. Be warned.
Big Gerri Hill fan. I wish there was some kind of warning, this book had to be written for the older fans of her out there. Yes the main characters are 37 and 33, but this book was deathly boring to me. I’m 33. The side characters are all 65 years old and up. Rough.
They talk about farming, food and depressing things 90% of the book. They rehash the incredibly depressing past CONSTANTLY. I’m not joking. The exes, Sarah and Adam are mentioned at least once a chapter.
This book is incredibly slow. It didn’t help that Zanzarellas monotone voice is so slow as well.
The intimate scenes are muted, no overt descriptions etc.
I wish someone else mentioned any of these things. I could’ve saved $20 and 9 hours. Yikes.

Classic Gerri Hill
By now those of us who listen to this author are familiar with the limited scope of her plot lines and this effort shows small variance. What the author does do quite well is to create three dimensional characters that I feel are easy to fall for. So spoiler warning here, there is a lot of Pelican's Landing in this book; indeed Erin has a much more believable motivation than Jordan Sims to return to her old life. It also contains no glaring inconsistencies or impossibly tangled motivations (Midnight Moon) that can limit the listener's enjoyment; at least slightly. This author's work continues to advance and I loved this one.

Satisfying romance
This is vintage Gerri Hill romance. One troubled stressed out city slicker gets sent to a remote womyn's commune where she has to detox from unhealthy work habits, caffeine, meat, digital devices and more. She is hosted by a woman with a difficult past, who loves the simple, solitary life she leads.
I really enjoyed this and felt myself longing for the kind of life described in the book. The love story is sweet and satisfying.
I haven't listened to a lot of Nicole Zanzarella's narrations, but this was really heartfelt and I want to look out for more by her.

No spoilers
I spent hours of this listen wishing these ladies could find their happily ever after.
I grew up with visits to my grandparents’ 40 acres. I miss that quiet time in the country. It’s good to unplug, slow down, and remind yourself what’s really important in life.
Good listen.

Wonderful read!
The story took me to a peaceful, healing, location. Each character was well developed and believable. Another great story by Gerri Hill, and exquisitely read by Nicol Zanzarella.

Just OK
I love me some Gerri Hill, but if you have never heard one of her books, don't start with this one, go get "The Secret Pond". I did find this very listenable but I did not find the characters to be very interesting. Gerri's characters are often going through some really intense negative emotions and this book is no different, but where, I connected with the characters in "The Secret Pond", I did not so much in this book. If you have Audible Escape it is definitely worth a listen but if you have a spend a token, there are probably other books I would spend it on before this one. I love Nicol Zanzarella's narration and she did a great job on this book.

Interesting and relatable
Generally I avoid this type of romance...
The storyline was very well developed with strong characters and complicated enough to hold my attention.
The idea of a utopia somewhere is rather appealing and maybe that’s what hooked me ....
I’m now dreaming of a Dwarf baby goat farm in a south western climate ....
In any case the narrator made the listening a pleasure and I’ve added her to my list. It was a feel good happy ending with real life twists and obstacles to overcome if you are a fan of this genre.
Definitely an author not to be overlooked.

love in the wilderness
Im not sure which was more alluring, the farm or its occupant, Mel.
Erin, city girl, after a break up, works too hard, drinks too much and eats too little. her family is so worried about her they send her to a new mexico retreat. most of the story is about her 3 months cleaning stalls, feeding chickens, playing with the twin goats and playing in the creek with Melanie. it is wonderful and she evolves into a healthy loving woman again. but then the 3 months are up and she must return to her old life.
Its a wonderful love story and both women mutually grow, heal and love.
the ending is predictable but very rich and the way you want it.
I had the audio version and the narrator, Nicol Zanzarella was terrific. she made the book come alive.
