About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

With a foreword by Paul McCartney

Many people will recognise the famous zebra crossing. Some visitors may have graffitied their name on its hallowed outer walls. Others might even have managed to penetrate the iron gates. But what draws in these thousands of fans here, year after year? What is it that really happens behind the doors of the most celebrated recording studio in the world?

It may have begun life as an affluent suburban house, but it soon became a creative hub renowned around the world as a place where great music, ground-breaking sounds and unforgettable tunes were forged—nothing less than a witness to, and a key participant in, the history of popular music itself.

What has been going on there for over ninety years has called for skills that are musical, creative, technical, mechanical, interpersonal, logistical, managerial, chemical and, romantics might be tempted add, close to magic.

This is for the people who believe in the magic.

Fascinating insights into the studio of studios.

David Hepworth never fails to provide an engaging and fascinating story and this book is another one of those fascinating books. Loads of stuff I had no idea had even been created in Abbey Road, lots of little stories & details shows how much deep research David had clearly done to make this - and his reading is awesome as always. Thank you, David!

Great Muso History of the ultimate studio

Great if you're a Beatles fan. Great if you're a Floyd fan. Great if you're any sort of music fan

The history of Abbey road is a fascinating book. The Mecca of recording for bands past present and no doubt future. The studio is a shrine of fantastic creativity. So much so that where bands used to bring their music to be recorded on occasion bands have just turned up without anything and sat in Studio 2 and waited for the bricks and mortar and spirits of the musical gods to bring them inspiration.

David Hepworth does a good job on the narration and paces it well. But 2 minutes in you're just sucked in and you're imagining every song and story.

You'll be heading to your favourite streaming service throughout as this book inspires you to revisit the classics or explore the many acts which you may have missed.

Groovy!

Hoary Old Rock Anecdotes from the master of the form

Very pleased to have listened to this as I’m very familiar with Hepworth’s voice from The Word in Your Ear podcasts. Some of the stories and hot takes are familiar from the podcast too. This is a skilful autobiography of a place, balancing the ‘place of work’ with the myth, with a series of stories told in an amusing, thoughtful and insightful manner.

Great Listen Well Written

Excellent audio book.
Not what I was expecting it’s obviously covers Abbey Road but there’s so much more.
The history of recording and production amongst other things
The price of adding silence back in the day !!!!
Nicely read
It also points out how you can use Abbey Road to master your tracks.
Highly recommend! !

So many great stories…

As with other books by Hepworth I’m wondering if there’ll be enough to keep me interested… as ever, more than I could have hoped.
More than ever I’m intent on a visit to one of the UK’s most famous roads. When I do, I’ll be giving this another listen en route.

Well up to his usual standard!

If you’re familiar with his previous books, then this will come as no surprise. That’s not meant as damning with faint praise, but rather a maintaining of high standards. Filled with anecdotes and a clear sense of chronology, it was a pleasure to listen to.

Another epic by David Hepworth

Whilst the Beatles are obviously important to the overall story, this is thankfully not a Beatles documentary.
Far better then I expected as a fan of his previous works
