Summary
Heaven commands and the Middle Kingdom Obeys.
Or so the story goes. Yet, as Wu Ying travels the lands beyond the kingdom of Shen, he sees both the minor and major truth of reality. Disparate forms of government, among kingdoms and villages, among immortal sects and mortal governance abound, each with their own interpretation.
As Wu Ying chases the traces of the Heaven's Wind, grasping at the truth it so elusively dangles before him, he must also contend with his own place under the Heaven's. Or among them.
The Third Realm is book eight of the xianxia cultivation series A Thousand Li. The series is about immortal cultivation, wondrous martial art styles and spirit beasts and will be loved by wuxia and xianxia fans. The Third Realm is written by Tao Wong, the best-selling scifi and fantasy LitRPG author of the System Apocalypse, Adventures on Brad, and the Hidden Wishes.

Great book
It’s just getting better and better with every book! The last book was a bit boring but I like the story telling in this book much more.

Trifecta of Xianxia
1. Tao Wong's imagery and story telling is amazing.
2. 14 + hours with Travis Baldree which brings this story life.
3. Evolution and definitely a progression for our protagonists !!

Enjoyed it!
The pacing threw me for a bit in the beginning but I ended up really enjoying the ride. If your are this far into the story then you already how well written of series this is, I will say this one is different from those that came before as it is more about being a wondering gatherer/cultivator. Travis is fantastic as always!

A let down - series of events/short stories?
Narration first:
Travis Baldree gets a full set of stars as he is frankly amazing as always - gotta love such a fantastic narrator.
Then the story:
This story reads as a series of short stories tied together.
The story spans a decade or more and Wu Ying jumps from one encounter to another with a few years between each short story. It makes it all disjointed and the relationships created don’t carry over to the next. The MC spends time in many of the short stories concluding that he as a wandering gatherer cannot make emotional ties and is destined to wander alone.
I kinda get why the author compiles in this way as it gives progress in Wu Ying cultivation life, but I’m starting to see a trend as I’ve also listened to Tao Wong’s System Apocalypse series and the MC there is emotionally stunted and a Lone wolf that accidentally gets a few hard core followers/friends. Is TW setting Wu Ying up as another of this kind? No relationships except shallow fleeting ones? And I’m not talking love interest but all human connections. I sincerely hope not as that isn’t a kind of MC I can root and care for - the MC can have autism and struggle with interconnections but if well done I’ll love and root for that character. But if its just I’m not interested in other people or anger as a substitute for other feelings, I’m not on board.
Not in every series anyway - so I’m crossing my fingers and hoping the next book will be a full story, with healthy emotions and not apathy or isolationism, and that we get to see Wu Ying grow stronger as a person and not just as a cultivator.
I’ll still be getting the next book but I might drop the series then if it doesn’t get back on track.

Good book!
The book AFTER the next one is going to be incredible. Nascent Soul is going to be teased for one more book, but then the real action is going to happen.
Action in this one was much better! Got away from the “here’s a problem, now spend the whole book on the way to fix it” of the first batch of books.

great author and narrator
This is just such an engaging story. Tao Wong is doing a great job melding asian story with western language. there are many other stories that are translations of great Chinese Wuxia novels but they are clearly not originally authored for western audience or language. Great Book!
Travis is by far my favorite narrator and hooked me with his work on Will Wright's cradle series.

Love this series
I continue to enjoy the journey and the insights that come as the main character grows and develops. This is the first book series that I follow. I’ve listened to each book at least twice in anticipation for the next. Thank you
