The Devonshire Mysteries are traditional British mysteries in a modern-day setting.
These are cosy mysteries (or "cozy mysteries" for Dan Corrigan's trans-Atlantic fans). There's a touch of dry humour and the stories pay homage to the legacies of Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle. You'll always find a mixed bag of suspects, plenty of clues and a few red herrings, so that you could have solved the mystery if only you'd put two and two together.Amateur Sleuth Dan Corrigan is quick-witted, driven and far too clever for his own good. The narrator over- thought his role
A reasonable story that was almost ruined by the narration. The reader had clearly thought about the characters and brought a little too much of that process to the book. The main character was given a sardonic drawl that served only to make him sound both stoned and angry. Meanwhile his neighbour sounds weak and irritating. It is obvious from the writing that this was not the author’s intention. Some good dialogue is mangled as a result and what would otherwise be quick humour is bogged down by a narrator putting his “art” before the story.
I will try the second in the series but only because it is read by a different narrator.

Very Enjoyable
This is a very good listen. I had read the kindle edition before I found the Audible performance. It's such a good story that I thought it might be nice to hear it read whilst I got on with some mundane tasks.
The main characters are both quite likeable chaps; Dan is a gruff cynic, Alan is gentle sort who tempers Dan's irascible moments. Dan has been through the wringer in his working life and has retreated to Devon to gather his wits and recover his equilibrium. Alan has taken early retirement from Primary teaching to write successful children's books.
Together, they solve the mystery surrounding a plaque with a cypher message found in a cafe. Along the way they learn about each other's personality traits, and Dan starts to relax under Alan's calm influence. I think it's safe to assume that Dan won't return to his city job and that they'll become firm friends as the books continue. I hope so.
The story was very enjoyable, well written and thought out. I would have liked a few more details as it felt like there were a few gaps - we found out what happened to Peter but what, exactly, happened to Cyril? I will admit, it was a sad revelation and it brought tears to my eyes, as the many senseless things about war often do. At least there was a happyish ending, and even if it took 100 years to happen, it was very touching.
Greg Barnett does a good job of the narration, but I found I needed to increase the play speed to 1.10 to make it sound normal. At the unadjusted speed the poor guy sounds half asleep, and very unenthusiastic about the story. Boosted to 1.10 he sounds much more normal!
Looking forward to more of Mr Campling's Devonshire mysteries on Audible!

Excellent!
I was so caught up in this story ! Beautifully written and the plot opened in a satisfying way.
Liked the characters and the interaction as they came to friendship .
Wasn’t expecting the depth of emotion I felt toward the finish/explanation……was completely
immersed in it .
I’d read the second book earlier ….liked it and was so pleased this first was no disappointment.
