Summary

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

"The war is over. The Separatists have been defeated, and the Jedi rebellion has been foiled. We stand on the threshold of a new beginning." (Emperor Palpatine)

For a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights brought peace and order to the Galactic Republic, aided by their connection to the mystical energy field known as the Force. But they were betrayed - and the entire galaxy has paid the price. It is the Age of the Empire.

Now Emperor Palpatine, once Chancellor of the Republic and secretly a Sith follower of the dark side of the Force, has brought his own peace and order to the galaxy. Peace through brutal repression, and order through increasing control of his subjects’ lives.

But even as the Emperor tightens his iron grip, others have begun to question his means and motives. And still others, whose lives were destroyed by Palpatine’s machinations, lay scattered about the galaxy like unexploded bombs, waiting to go off....

The first Star Wars novel created in collaboration with the Lucasfilm Story Group, Star Wars: A New Dawn is set during the legendary "Dark Times" between Episodes III and IV and tells the story of how two of the lead characters from the animated series Star Wars Rebels first came to cross paths. Featuring a foreword by Dave Filoni.

A great introduction to the Rebels

Great story on how Kanan and Hera met. would be nice to hear how Sabine and Zeb became part of the ghost's crew also.

A great prequel to the TV series

I watched all the show before reading this, and it was well integrated. either could be watched or read first and still make sense.

An added bonus to this audio book is the inclusion of immersive sound effects and music, which helps to convey the atmosphere of the scenes.

Excellent rebels companion novel

The new canon has been blessed with alot of Great novels.

new dawn is one of the first of the new additions and it was a great step for the modern Lucas story team.
the novels story is small scale and interesting with a great cast of characters and a much more down to earth line up of hero's even the Jedi is not so wise.

it's a classic story of the rebellion and what it means and what it will take to over throw the empire.

I highly recommend this book.

Excellent world building

As a fan of the Star Wars: Rebels series, I’ve been seeking stories that expand my knowledge of the characters. The addition of Rae Sloane provided an excellent crossover as I’ve also really enjoyed the Aftermath trilogy as well.

Excellent pace, twists, character development, and world building. Nicely narrated as well.

I’m left hoping for more from this author and his portrayal of the characters.

1 of 3 worst Star Wars novels ever written

Thompson narrates far too many of these Star Wars novels, to the point that his performance is noticeably monotone, rushed, and contains repeated mistakes in him forgetting which voice he is doing and crossing them over. My personal belief is: have a limit and don’t narrate so much. Quality of work over quantity. The insipid woman called Zeluna—I cringe every time I hear Thompson voicing her with his imitation of MGM’s Droopy Dog.

The novel itself is terrible. I don’t care to finish the remaining 2 hours, but I will. Miller has made Jarrus a dislikable character. I don’t mind him in Rebels. In this novel, he’s a moron not worth rooting for. Supporting cast is utterly rubbish and unimaginative. Not a single interesting character introduced. Material like this reminds me that my fandom of Star Wars is limited. I am definitely not someone who likes everything from a franchise just for the sake of being a fan. It must be good, which these days, is increasingly rare across leading entertainment properties.

Great story and a must for Rebels fans

Really enjoyed the story and getting some further background on Kanan Jarrus. Well narrated as I like the additional sound effects that make it a bit more than just a reading.
