About this listen

Raised on a South Carolina plantation as the house pet of her white master's daughter, Kitty never made a decision for herself. Now, as a young adult, she must preserve her faith while making the biggest decision ever: stay with her master and go south to avoid the Yankees or run away tonight to the North with Grady, the field slave she has come to love.

Renowned author Lynn Austin has received three Christy Awards for historical fiction, two for the first books in this Refiner's Fire series.

I defy anyone to remain racist after reading this

Gives a good perspective of what it must have been like to live as slaves from the viewpoint of different slaves. This book has it all:hatred, resentment, anger, dehumanisation, murder, faith, love, mercy and forgiveness.

The horror the slaves endured

I found the way the slaves were treated horrendous! I felt that I was going through the torture with them. It was graphic and I imagine, also realistic. It makes one realise the huge inequality that existed then and in some ways, still does to this day.

Great research on the part of the author. An eye-opening novel. I recommend it.

Emotional, heart ranching listen. Narrator was easy to listen to and great at depicting different characters. Highly recommend if you don’t mind a story that makes you cry
