About this listen

THE NO. 1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES

'The best of the new cosy crime writers' Daily Telegraph

It's spring 1990, and in Champton the whole village is aflutter as a glamorous Hollywood movie has taken over Lord de Floures' Champton House as its set location.

As the actors and extras hired from the village don their farthingales, gowns and crowns for a masque set in the 1600s, a murder interrupts filming on set - and it's an ingenious one . . .

Can Daniel solve the mystery with help from his sidekick, Detective Sergeant Neil Vanloo - even when things are so sticky between them?

The reason I love RRC’s writing is that his murders don’t feel formulaic. We never know who is going to fall under the Reaper’s scythe or how many will fall after them. Midsomer Murders they are not!

This novel gives us more insight into the world of Champton and its history AND there is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL twist in it too!

I believe this is my favourite Canon Clement novel after Murder Before Evensong. Listening to it again forthwith!

Rev Richard always keeps us guessing!

I have always liked this series which combines so many of the things that interest me, cozy crime, church history, LGBTIQ+ and diversity and inclusion, and general intelligent conversation in a 1980s setting. I also enjoy that it is narrated by the author, who as we know is a Borderline National Trinket. But this is definitely the best so far.

The best one so far

I eagerly awaited this book but after one day I have to say I am disappointed with the pace at which Richard Coles is reading it. It is too much for me, the characters flit past leaving me out of breath unsure of who’s who. I have tried slowing the speed but that doesn’t work. I want a read to be enjoyable but this leaves me whirling!. The story so far is OK but a bit too soon to judge.

Slow down!
