Summary

Why does no one understand her? All Sashia wants is to learn, but she is constantly told to stop asking questions and mind her own business. There must be some purpose for her insatiable curiosity. The workings of the human body fascinate her - if only she could learn more! Could injuries be better treated and death itself avoided with a more thorough knowledge of anatomy?

When an itinerant healer and his wife discover Sashia and offer her an apprenticeship, she jumps at the chance. However, life holds even more unexpected twists as she catches the eye of the crown prince of Berush. Will Sashia be able to pursue her career as a healer, or will handsome Prince Cyrus change her plans? With her heart torn between two great passions, which will she choose?

Life is uncertain, and Sashia soon finds some things are out of her control. She struggles to shape her own destiny in a patriarchal society where polygamy is legal and women are subject to their father or spouse.

Slight of frame, but fierce in heart, Sashia will need every ounce of strength she possesses, and the wisdom and support of friends and allies, to endure what her future holds. What other obstacles must she overcome to live her dreams and find happiness?

Historic fantasy with some christian morals

[ARC review]

It took me some time to get into the story fully. The first part felt a little slow to me and I'm not sure I was overly fond of the narrator. But both definitely grew on me.

Due to the themes of the story I would categorize this is an Adult historical fantasy (no magic or anything fantastical) despite the fact that it's clean enough for a younger audience.

My favourites:
- The (Christian?) morals interwoven during the story. Themes like justice, forgiveness, charity, choosing what to make of your life all played an important role, which I liked.
- Adult, but clean subjects. Although the story doesn't shy away from death, mental health issues, post-partum depression, romance or the ups and downs of giving birth and parenthood, it deals with these in a classic, tasteful manner.

Sexual content: none (there are references to marital intimacy etc. but nothing steamy happens on screen)
Crude language: none
Violence: moderate (there are executions and wars but they're not very detailed on screen. the author does, however, describe quite graphically the physical injuries and women's labour that the MC deals with)

Conclusion
If you like historical fantasy, and especially if you are a mother (since you'll recognize the MC's experiences later in her life) I can definitely recommend this for a nice relaxing 'read'. Despite the fact that I think a different narrator might have made it even better, I really genuinely enjoyed this book.
